The Clock

New Entries

Today I present some stamps from Switzerland and Libya...Switzerland is one of the few countries where the number of recent stamps that I have is much larger than those of earlier days...From Libya , I just have some 1967 stamps and a few recent ones.. it is , as all the other North Africa countries , something that is waiting for "evolution" during next years...

Let us start with Switzerland...

This stamp is damaged in the inferior right corner, but it has a beautiful oval shaped Watermark..[I like to show Wmk's when they are clearly visible...] Scott World Catalog talks about an oval Wmk with a Cross inside...(??...!) but , where is the Cross..?? after we see this wmk so clearly, it is expected that the Cross is easily seen... but it isn't... Unfortunately , I don't have any other Wmk stamp from Switzerland, so I cannot conclude anything.. and I need to have access to a National Catalog, once more, of course..!
This is a stamp from a series (8) issued between 1882 and 1899...[ I should have explained this earlier, but I will do it now... when I talk of an issue like this , in a long frame of time , I wish to say that stamps from this series were issued until 1899..( for example the 2c in 1882, the 5c in 1890 and the 15c in 1899..). I think the general idea is clear...]
Perf: 11.5
SG(126Bd) Sc(69)
[Granite Paper] [Typo][Wmk]

Here we have stamps from two different series , but the landscape represented is the same..    (view from the Chillon Castle)...
1st) from a series (7+SS) 1934 "Landscapes"
Perf: 11.5
SG(352) Sc(221)
[Granite Paper][Typo]
2nd)3rd) these two stamps belong to a series (11) "Landscapes (1936/1942)" ; this series has 3 10c stamps (Red Violet, Red Brown and Orange Brown).. I think that these stamps are the Red Brown and Orange Brown...[I have great difficulty with colors...]..in the case of the Red Violet 10c stamp(I present this only by curiosity...) , we need to distinguish two types...A) the lines inside the 'zero' are all vertical lines B) there are other lines that cross the vertical ones..
Perf: 11.5
SG(370Ad,372A) Sc(229,230)

Some stamps from Angola and El Salvador.

Here it is one of the series of the classic Period of Angola Philately..The stamp represent's King D. Manuel II, son of King D. Carlos I, the last King of Portugal.. In 05/10/1910 Monarchy was abolished and Republic was implanted..
As I said before , a great knowledge of papers is needed for the classic Period of Portuguese and Ex-Colonies Philately.. In this case ,however, to classify these stamps You only need a catalog...
An overprint "Republica" is presented, because the series was issued in 1912, after the end of the Monarchy. Without entering in details , I could say that two papers are used in this series.. Enamel paper (from the 5r to the 75r[ the only stamp missing in this series..]) and colored Porcelain Paper (the last 3 stamps ..); the 200r stamp has a original color Green on Salmon, but the effect of light through time can change it easily to Green on Yellow (or some Yellow based color...)
This is a series (10) 1912 "Overprint 'Republica' over King D. Manuel II"
Perf: 11.5
SG(166,167,168,169,170,171,173,174,175) Sc(103,104,105,106,107,108,110,111,112)

Now , let us enter the domain of El Salvador Philately... from what I know , my favorite period (the 30's and 40's ), is very well represented  with lots of beautiful stamps...
This series present's us a group of important Personalities in El Salvador history :
1) Isidro Menendez (Father of the El Salvador Legislation)
2) Crisanto Salazar (First Head-Master of the National University)
3) Juan Bertis (First Humanist in El Salvador)
4) Francisco Dueñas (During his Presidency , First Postage stamps were issued..)
5) Ramon Belloso (General of the Allied forces against the "Filibuster" William Walker) *
The stamps are printed and engraved by the "American Bank Note Company.Co"
The stamps belong to a series 9 1947..
Perf: 12
SG(950,...,954) Sc(596,...,600)

a link to know more about Ramon Belloso, and this strange "Filibuster" War..

Complete Air Mail series from 1930
Printed and Engraved by Waterlow and Sons, Ltd.
Perf: 12.5
SG(775,...,778) Sc(C11,...,C14)

This is a series that present us various motifs of El Salvador.. Nature, Monuments,Personalities, etc. However, we must see that in the superior corners the label "UPU" appear.. this fact tell's us that the series have something to do with the "Universal Postal Union".. the stamp represent the Statue of Daniel Hernandez.(born in 1840 , was well know by his knowledge in Mathematics, Astronomy and Physics, and was also a Benefactor in several different aspects of El Salvador society..)
Series (10) 1924/1925
Perf: 12.5
SG(750) Sc(495)

The stamp show us the Izalco volcano..it belongs to another series with various motifs.. Nature and Main Industry's (Earth products, Flora...) ; the stamp, as we can see , is badly damaged because it was heavily hinged..
[Engraved]
Series (9) 1935
Perf: 12.5
SG(863) Sc(550)

I finish this post with some stamps from an unidentified series... the stamp itself represent's the coat of Arms of El Salvador, but I cannot find in the Catalogs I use this particular overprint...
Some help is needed , so if you know something about these stamps, please comment...

The General

New Entries

Today , I'll present some stamps from Yugoslavia and Colombia..

The group of stamps presented above is a mix of two series... Two incomplete series , one (8) [the 2p stamp is missing] representing King Alexander of Yugoslavia and the other (5) [the 10d stamp is missing] King Peter I of Yugoslavia...they are grouped in just one series in the Scott Catalog because they all present the label  "Kraljevstvo", below the King's picture... As you can see in the stamp at the right , the label is "Kraljevina" , and it belongs to another posterior series equal in all other labels and pictures..
[Left]
A) Incomplete series "King Alexander (1921)" SG(165,..,172) Sc(2,..,9)
B) Incomplete series "King Peter I (1921)" SG(173,...,176) Sc(10,...,13)

[Right]
stamp from the series (5) "King Alexander (1923)"
Perf: 12
SG(189) Sc(22)
[ Printed and Engraved by 'American Bank Note Co.' ]

In one of the first posts of this Blog, I have presented 4 of the 14 stamps of this series.. however I need to say that there are two similar series (similar design but this one has an extra label in the inferior frame)
Series (14) "King Alexander (1931/1934)"
Perf: 12.5
SG(255) Sc(73)

five stamps from the "King Alexander Memorial Series" (14) from 1934..
Perf: 12.5
SG(305,...,309) Sc(102,...,106)

Complete series from 1899 "General José Maria Córdoba" ; it is a series from Colombia , but also from the Antioquia Province..
when I saw these stamps, I immediately went to the NET to see other images of the stamps, because they seem to me with a very bad printing... they all look the same , so I concluded that they were "genuine"... the curious thing is that the printing from the frames is good but the central design and printing of the General is very bad , and the design it self is not very perfect....I also think that there was no reason to make a falsification , because of the very small catalog value of these stamps...
Perf: 11.5 [other perforations and even imperforated stamps exists...]
SG(118,...,128) Sc(117,...,127)
