Portugal [8th Post], Angola [6th Post] Cape Verde [3rd Post]

New Entries

Lately I have spent many time with a part of my collection that has became increasingly important..the first stamps my father left me , were from the Portuguese Colonies, but with time I became deeply involved with stamps from all over the world, learning many things from many different Philatelies...now I am back to my roots and this part of my stamp collection had a great boost with the small collection I bought last October, I think... It had stamps from all over the world but with a special emphasis in the Portugal and colonies Philately... today I have some new entries that came from that collection..let us start with Portugal..

These are the stamps from the 1st Independence Series... there are 3 of these series that are mainly focused in the vast History of the Country..it is perhaps one of the group of series with more representations of fierce battles taken place somewhere between the XII and the XVIII centuries..[ if You are a fan of War stamps,You must have these.!.. Libyan stamps (there are many of them..) from the end of the 70's and 80's are also very good in this particular thematic and I think there was a annual series about famous Libyan Battles.. Great stamps...!]...
the stamps were engraved by two British Artists, George Harrison and Norman Broad and the printing was work of Thomas De La rue , Co, London... the AFINSA catalog tell us that only the frames are originals of this series ,while the vignettes were not designed with the purpose of being used in these stamps...in the end , we have here a nice series with good design and engraving details...
1926 "Independence (1st Series)" (21) [Des (Frames (Eduardo Avelino Ramos de Sousa)][Engr (George Harrison)(Norman Broad)][Recess (Thomas De La Rue Co., London)] Sc(377,...,397)

Here is the 2nd series, now a smaller one , with just 15 stamps...The work of De la Rue is very good with the engraving work at charge of Harrison and Broad again...The design of the stamps was work of Alberto de Sousa , Roque Gameiro and Alfredo Morais.. Sousa was a Monster of Portuguese Stamp Designing with hundreds of stamps from Portugal and Colonies... Roque Gameiro, one of the Greatest Portuguese Illustrators and Painters and Alfredo Morais an important Illustrator...
This time the stamps show us the Guimarães Castle, the Knight in Battle is Gonçalo Mendes da Maia (O Lidador) , the lady with a wood stick is the Aljubarrota Baker Lady, the man with the Law Book is Dr. João das Regras and the man in the Yellow portrait is Dr. João Pinto Ribeiro...the battle also represented is the Battle of Montijo...
1927 "Independence (2nd Series)" (15) [Des (Alberto Sousa 2c)(Alfredo Roque Gameiro 3c,32c)(Alfredo Morais 5c,40,4$50)][Engr (George Harrison)(Norman Broad)][Recess (Thomas De La Rue, London)] Sc(422,...,436)

Starting now with the Angola'n stamps,we stumbled into one of those series that repeated itself for every single one of the colonies....it is the Marquis de Pombal Series...

These are Postal Tax due stamps, and we will find here again the work of foreign Artists... The design was from Hugo Fleury , an employee of  Waterlow and Sons...The engraving was at charge of J.A.C. Harrison (1st and 2nd stamps) and G. Fairweather (3rd stamp) and the Printing was made by Waterlow...

Angola 1925 "Marquis de Pombal / Tax due stamps" (3) [Des (Hugo Fleury)][Engr (JAC Harrison)][G. Fairweather)][Recess (Waterlow and Sons)] Sc(RAJ1,...,RAJ3)

This is a series from 1938 and it is about the President's visit to Angola, but the design of the stamp itself represent something we, Portuguese call "Padrão" , that is a marble or Stone Column with the Cross in the top and Portugal's Coat of Arms just below... these signs were left behind whenever the ships arrive to a new land, just to mark the presence of Portuguese Navigators...it is a beautiful stamp ,this time Designed , engraved and printed by Bradbury Wilkinson....
Angola 1938 "1st visit of Portugal's President to the Colonies" (3) [Recess (Bradbury Wilkinson)] Sc(292,293,294)

I had already almost all the 10 stamps of this AIR series but some years have passed without the missing 8$50 and 12$50 stamps appear in my World...recently I the entire series ,just to have those two stamps... it is a very beautiful series, now clearly [Litho] printed, like almost all of the Portuguese Colonies stamps of the 50's 60's and 70's....
Angola 1965 "AIR MAIL" (10) [Litho (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(C26,...,C35)

Now I have another AIR MAIL series, this time from Cape Verde... it is also another of those common designs repeated in the colonies...

A series from 1938 where we return to the foreign British influence in the printing and engravings... The illustrations are from Arnaldo Ressano Garcia, a Career Military that when had the time , published many illustrations and caricatures in several Magazines ... it is a beautiful design with printing of Bradbury Wilkinson...
Cape Verde 1938 "AIR MAIL / Portuguese Colonial Empire" (9) (Des (Arnaldo Ressano Garcia)][Recess (Bradbury Wilkinson)] Sc(C1,...,C9)

Another of those series where just 2 or 3 stamps were missing.. well, they appeared and finally it is a new entry to the collection...a fact we must have in consideration is that the printing of these stamps is not the best ,because there are several problems with the correct position of the colors that often appear misplaced in the design...
A interesting thing I have to say is that in the group of stamps that my father left me , there were 2 envelopes full of stamps of the $50 and 2$50 values... I never understand the real reason of this fact and I don't find anything special in the catalogs,so I remain in total ignorance about the real intentions of this strange stock of stamps...maybe one day I will find something interesting...
Cape Verde 1968 "Products of Cape Verde" (10) [Des (José de Moura)][Litho] Sc(345,...,354)

Well, we reached the end of this small post... hope You like it..!

Goodbye

Angola (5th Post), Mozambique (2nd Post), Timor (1st Post)

New Entries

A Great number of my last posts are dedicated to a single country, with stamps of one or more periods of a country's Philately...today , I have a post with stamps from 3 countries and I decided to present them together because the stamps are from the Colonial Period of these countries, all under Portuguese Authority and influence...
It will be a brief and small post , where i will present 3 complete series, one for each country...none of these 3 series are rare but at the same time they are not easy to get in their complete form...many of the stamps from these countries are very common, specially those from the 50's and 60's but the pictorial stamps from the 30's and 40's are not so easy... I am still trying to get the Cape Verde and Macau's "Views" series , both from 1948...

Let us start with the "Sights and views" from Angola...

All these "Sights and views" series from 1948 are work of one of the Greatest Portuguese stamp designers... I'm talking about Alberto de Souza, that has many, many stamps for Portugal and many of them also for the Ex-colonies... the stamps are also engraved by several Artists , and are [Litho] printed ...
Lately I have made some remarks about the scans and the resolution we should use for each kind of printing.. with these Angola stamps, I've used the wrong resolution, with to much detail.. I should have used the 400ppp , that it is the adequate for these stamps ...there is the possibility of the existence of some slight differences in the colors, so if you could arrange some spare stamps , better (collecting different shades is always FUN..!)
All the information about these stamps and all the others from Angola, and all the Portuguese colonies are present in the "AFINSA Colónias" Catalog.. I am a avid user of stamp catalogs and I must say that both the Catalogs ("AFINSA PORTUGAL" and "AFINSA Colonias") are very good , with all the technical details, printings , designers , engravers, etc and even some historical remarks about the early classic emissions...Both are very detailed and are good and necessary acquisitions for the collector...
1948 "Sights and Views of Angola" (7) [Des (M. Jorge 20c,40c)(Alberto de Souza others)][Engr (José Rosa 20c)(Arnaldo Fragoso others except 40c/Mint)] [Litho] Sc(319,...,324)

The series has 20 stamps, with 10 different designs... there is not much to say about this series.. some of the stamps are really beautiful and they don't have the usual overall aspect of the Portuguese colonial stamps...Engraved stamps are not a common fact among the stamps made for the colonies and this is what make this group of series so special....
1948 "Sights and Views from Mozambique" (20) [Des (M. Jorge 2$50,10$,15$,20$) (Alberto de Souza  / others)][Engr (José Rosa 5c,30c)(Marcelino Norte 20c,40c)(Gustavo Araujo 60c, 1$75,3$,3$50)(Guilherme Santos 10c,1$20)(Americo Carvalho 1.50,2$,15$,20$)(Arnaldo Fragoso / others)][Litho (Casa Da Moeda)] Sc(305,...,324)

These are good examples of stamps that could not have been made in our days, in 2016... first , because the idea of a country having colonies is outrageous...in second , because stamps degrading the native woman in such a way are not possible and our Moral standards cannot comply to this view of things...however , I think that , as a collector, I should describe this series , only as "Indigenous People" and restrain myself of doing any other type of considerations...other day, I saw an article  about the Portuguese colonial stamps, and all the talking was about slavery and condemnation of  the traffic of slaves between continents... it is true that , with our eyes, "the eyes of the future" all of that was highly irregular, but I think that we should not , in any case, give our personal opinion about the History related in a stamp.. that is not the role of the collector.. We should not use stamps to give our personal opinion, and we should not mix things...A stamp is something made in a particular time frame , and we should use the ideas accepted in those days to understand the stamp and what it represents....nothing more!!! Don't forget that I am talking as a world Stamp Collector.. I cannot have barriers to my ultimate desire, that is to collect...what to say about Hitler's and the III Reich stamps?? should they be forgotten ?? why,?  the ideas behind them are the worst, but the stamps themselves, could be like many others ,beautiful and work of great Artists...should they be forgotten??? should We , World collectors, comply with these ideological barriers..?. NO, is my answer.. if we do not mix our opinion about the idea behind the stamp with the stamp itself, we are "immune" to this "Time Barrier"....for me, collecting Hitler's stamps or "Butterflies" stamps is just the same thing... only nice designs, possible good engravings, different papers and perforations, some nice colors...... stamps!

Now , some considerations about these particular stamps are in order... I cannot keep from seeing that the printing is not the best... some stamps present a displacement of the colors or lack of detail, and that is something we are not costumed with Portuguese stamps... the usual [Litho] printing is in general a good one , and this is a bad example of those printings...
1948 "Indigenous People" (8) [Des (Alberto de Souza)][Litho] Sc(246,...,253)

Next time i will have some Guatemala stamps..

New Entries

Today I have some stamps from the classical Period of Angola and 3 series from the 40's and 50's of Portugal...As we all know Angola was officially 'discovered' by the Navigator Diogo Cão between 1482 and 1486..The first Portuguese Governor of Angola was nominated in 1575.. Angola became an Independent state in 11 November 1975..
So , when we talk of the Classical Period of Angola , we are talking of Portuguese stamps in Angola... The main series were the same one's that were issued in Portugal...
Since the beginning of this blog , I  always said that due to difficulties with the identification of different papers, I wont talk about the classical period in Portugal (for now ,of course!!!)..
With these Angola stamps, this knowledge is not yet needed, because there are other factors of selection that enable the classification, without the differentiation of the different papers by the 'simple touch' of our fingers.. And now you are asking.. Why can't he start to study this differentiation.??. because, some of the Portuguese Classical stamps are not cheap (for my current status.. ) and to do such a study we need to have several exemplars of each stamp, before initiating a better differentiation of the different papers.. This is not yet the time..

well, enough talking, let us start...

I will start by saying again that the stamps have the same size, but this image bonding's I use to make , sometimes have a 'not so good result'.. These are stamps from 1881/1885, but the Original series was issued in 1875 (the first series of Angola stamps..).. This new series from 1881 has a different set of colors... The main factor of differentiation in all the stamps of this period is the Perforation.. in this case and just for confirmation, we need to know of the existence of two main varieties, depending on the inferior numeral labels...for the 1st stamp , we have a perf 13.5 and clearly a type II stamp.. In the first series there is a 25r variety with Color Rose and perf 13.5, with undefined type.. well this 25r stamp I present , at a first look seems to be of rose color.., but the Center seems to be violet... that  is the real color we are after.. This was the opportunity we seek to know what is the color stated in the catalogs.. it is the the color of the background Crown center of the stamp and just that!! . a Violet stamp, Perf 13.5 and type II..
The 2nd stamp has Perf 12.5 and type I.. the color is blue/Dark blue, so there is no confusion about this one...
1881/1885 "Crown" (5) [Des[Engr  (Augusto Fernando Gerard)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(12,15)

These are stamps from the series of 1886 "King D. Luis I"...One of the main characteristics of this series is the Embossed Portrait and labels..The stamps are printed in Porcelain Paper and the perforations could be 12.5 and 13.5...Over this series and the next one's of king D. Carlos I, there are many Overprints and surcharges.. ahead in this post we will talk about them with examples..
1886 "King D. Luis I" (9) [Des[Engr (Frederico Augusto de Campos)][Typo (Casa da Moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(16,...,19,21,22,23)

These are stamps from King D. Carlos I , issued in 1893/1894..In the first 3 stamps, the colors are somehow faded and seem to be behind a very dense fog... The stamps could be printed using Porcelain Paper or dotted paper.. each one of these main varieties could have 3 perforations (11.5,12.5 or 13.5)..; if , after measuring the perforations, we don't reach nothing conclusive,, we have to search if the paper is dotted or not.. it is very easy to see .. with these two information's , the classification is immediate...the last two stamps have the colors Blue on blue and blue on Orange..
1893/1894 "King D. Carlos I" (12) [Des[Engr  (Manuel Diogo Neto)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)]
1st ,3rd Stamp] Dotted Paper,Perf 13.5 Sc(25)
2nd,Stamp] Porcelain Paper, Perf 11.5 Sc(28)
4th Stamp] Porcelain Paper Perf. 12.5 Sc(30b)
5th Stamp] Porcelain Paper Perf. 13.5 Sc(36)

The first two stamps, are from the Original Mouchon series of King D. Carlos I, issued in 1898/1901..It is for me the most beautiful D. Carlos I design.. it is designed and engraved by Eugene Mouchon, and there is nothing more to tell about this particular series..
The last two stamps are surcharges over D.Luis and D. Carlos I stamps from 1886 and 1893 respectively, issued in 1902 .. there are two main varieties of these stamps , and the distinctive fact is the distance between the numeral and the Surcharge label /REIS' .. type 1 (3mm), type 2 (4mm).. The D. Luis stamps could have 12.5 and 13.5 perf..and are printed in Porcelain Paper..The D. Carlos I stamps could have 11.5,12.5 or 13.5 perf., and are printed in Porcelain , Dotted or Flat paper.. From this quick view over these D. Carlos I Surcharges, we can see that we must connect the 3 papers, the 3 perforations and the 2 Variations.. For the study and classification of Portuguese or Former colonies Classic Stamps, it is better to have a AFINSA Catalog, or one of the other catalogs existent until the 70's (Simões Ferreira,etc).. it is not possible to classify these stamps with a World catalog or a simplified catalog..
1st,2nd Stamps] 1898/1901 "King D. Carlos I (Mouchon Series)" (15) [Des[Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(39,40)
3rd Stamp] 1902 "Surcharge on 'King D. Luis'" (9) [Des[Engr (Frederico Augusto de Campos)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(68) [Type I violet  12.5]
4th Stamp] 1902 "Surcharge on 'King D. Carlos I'" (13) [Des[Engr (Manuel Diogo Neto)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(81) [Type II, blue on blue 12.5]

Another group of stamps, now one of Overprinted Surcharges...to talk about this next Overprint "Republica" is talking about the Assassination of King Carlos I and his son , the Prince Luis Filipe, in February 1908... King Manuel II reigned after the Death of Carlos I , until 1910, when at 05 October , the Republic was established in Portugal...This event led to the necessity of overprinting all the Monarchy Stamps with "REPUBLICA", allusive to the new Regime...
There is also a technical detail about this Overprint.. if We look for the first 2 stamps, we can see they are identical, same value, same surcharge, same color, etc.. However , the Overprint is different but it's meaning is the same .. it is written in a different way... the 1st stamp has a Overprint typographed from the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon..the 2nd stamp has a local Overprint..
The first 3 stamps are in it's original form surcharges over King D.Luis stamps, from 1902..then , they were overprinted with "REPUBLICA" in 1914 and 1915.. in 1914 we had the Local Overprints and in 1915 the Casa da Moeda Overprints..
1st,3rd Stamps] 1915 "Overprint 'REPUBLICA' on '1902 Surcharge over  King D.Luis'" (3) [[Des[Engr (Frederico Augusto de Campos)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(208,209)

The first four stamps have local overprints on Mouchon Series.. The 2nd group of stamps , also from the Mouchon Series present's us Surcharges in r (1912) and c. (1919)
1st Group] 1914 "Overprint 'Republica' on 'King D. Carlos (Mouchon Series)'" (10)  Sc(159,161,162,167)
2nd Group] 1st Stamp] 1912 "Surcharge over '1911 Overprint 'Republica' on King D. Carlos I (Mouchon Series)'" (3) Sc(115)
2nd,3rd,4th Stamps] 1919 Surcharges in c. over 'Continental and Local 'Republic' Overprints on King D. Carlos I (Mouchon Series)'" (2)(2) Sc(217,221,222)

well, this quick passage over the New entries for Angola is ended , and now I will show 3 series from Portugal that I bought  some days ago, because they were at a very low price (I had ti buy them...)..

This is a series from 1940 that presents Sir Rowland Hill , one of the most represented personalities in stamps of all over the world..
Portugal 1940 "Centenary of First Adhesive Postage Stamps" (8) [Des (Pedro Guedes)][Engr (Arnaldo Fragoso)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(595,...,602)

Portugal 1944 "Birth Bicentenary of Avellar Brotero (botanist)" (4) [Des (Jaime Martins Barata)][Engr (Gustavo de Almeida Araujo $10, 1$75)(Marcelino Norte de Almeida $50,1$00)][Typo (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(638,...,641)

The 3$50 stamp is definitely not in good condition , but in the end it was a good 'buy'...

It a series with common designs used in all the former Portuguese Colonies... it emphasis's Explorer's , Navigator's , Warrior's and Men of Knowledge, that distinguish themselves in Portuguese History..
In this particular series , we have designs of Vasco Da Gama , Mouzinho de Albuquerque , Prince Henry the Navigator , and Afonso De Albuquerque..

Some stamps from Angola and El Salvador.

Here it is one of the series of the classic Period of Angola Philately..The stamp represent's King D. Manuel II, son of King D. Carlos I, the last King of Portugal.. In 05/10/1910 Monarchy was abolished and Republic was implanted..
As I said before , a great knowledge of papers is needed for the classic Period of Portuguese and Ex-Colonies Philately.. In this case ,however, to classify these stamps You only need a catalog...
An overprint "Republica" is presented, because the series was issued in 1912, after the end of the Monarchy. Without entering in details , I could say that two papers are used in this series.. Enamel paper (from the 5r to the 75r[ the only stamp missing in this series..]) and colored Porcelain Paper (the last 3 stamps ..); the 200r stamp has a original color Green on Salmon, but the effect of light through time can change it easily to Green on Yellow (or some Yellow based color...)
This is a series (10) 1912 "Overprint 'Republica' over King D. Manuel II"
Perf: 11.5
SG(166,167,168,169,170,171,173,174,175) Sc(103,104,105,106,107,108,110,111,112)

Now , let us enter the domain of El Salvador Philately... from what I know , my favorite period (the 30's and 40's ), is very well represented  with lots of beautiful stamps...
This series present's us a group of important Personalities in El Salvador history :
1) Isidro Menendez (Father of the El Salvador Legislation)
2) Crisanto Salazar (First Head-Master of the National University)
3) Juan Bertis (First Humanist in El Salvador)
4) Francisco Dueñas (During his Presidency , First Postage stamps were issued..)
5) Ramon Belloso (General of the Allied forces against the "Filibuster" William Walker) *
The stamps are printed and engraved by the "American Bank Note Company.Co"
The stamps belong to a series 9 1947..
Perf: 12
SG(950,...,954) Sc(596,...,600)

a link to know more about Ramon Belloso, and this strange "Filibuster" War..

Complete Air Mail series from 1930
Printed and Engraved by Waterlow and Sons, Ltd.
Perf: 12.5
SG(775,...,778) Sc(C11,...,C14)

This is a series that present us various motifs of El Salvador.. Nature, Monuments,Personalities, etc. However, we must see that in the superior corners the label "UPU" appear.. this fact tell's us that the series have something to do with the "Universal Postal Union".. the stamp represent the Statue of Daniel Hernandez.(born in 1840 , was well know by his knowledge in Mathematics, Astronomy and Physics, and was also a Benefactor in several different aspects of El Salvador society..)
Series (10) 1924/1925
Perf: 12.5
SG(750) Sc(495)

The stamp show us the Izalco volcano..it belongs to another series with various motifs.. Nature and Main Industry's (Earth products, Flora...) ; the stamp, as we can see , is badly damaged because it was heavily hinged..
[Engraved]
Series (9) 1935
Perf: 12.5
SG(863) Sc(550)

I finish this post with some stamps from an unidentified series... the stamp itself represent's the coat of Arms of El Salvador, but I cannot find in the Catalogs I use this particular overprint...
Some help is needed , so if you know something about these stamps, please comment...
