Portugal [8th Post], Angola [6th Post] Cape Verde [3rd Post]

New Entries

Lately I have spent many time with a part of my collection that has became increasingly important..the first stamps my father left me , were from the Portuguese Colonies, but with time I became deeply involved with stamps from all over the world, learning many things from many different Philatelies...now I am back to my roots and this part of my stamp collection had a great boost with the small collection I bought last October, I think... It had stamps from all over the world but with a special emphasis in the Portugal and colonies Philately... today I have some new entries that came from that collection..let us start with Portugal..

These are the stamps from the 1st Independence Series... there are 3 of these series that are mainly focused in the vast History of the Country..it is perhaps one of the group of series with more representations of fierce battles taken place somewhere between the XII and the XVIII centuries..[ if You are a fan of War stamps,You must have these.!.. Libyan stamps (there are many of them..) from the end of the 70's and 80's are also very good in this particular thematic and I think there was a annual series about famous Libyan Battles.. Great stamps...!]...
the stamps were engraved by two British Artists, George Harrison and Norman Broad and the printing was work of Thomas De La rue , Co, London... the AFINSA catalog tell us that only the frames are originals of this series ,while the vignettes were not designed with the purpose of being used in these stamps...in the end , we have here a nice series with good design and engraving details...
1926 "Independence (1st Series)" (21) [Des (Frames (Eduardo Avelino Ramos de Sousa)][Engr (George Harrison)(Norman Broad)][Recess (Thomas De La Rue Co., London)] Sc(377,...,397)

Here is the 2nd series, now a smaller one , with just 15 stamps...The work of De la Rue is very good with the engraving work at charge of Harrison and Broad again...The design of the stamps was work of Alberto de Sousa , Roque Gameiro and Alfredo Morais.. Sousa was a Monster of Portuguese Stamp Designing with hundreds of stamps from Portugal and Colonies... Roque Gameiro, one of the Greatest Portuguese Illustrators and Painters and Alfredo Morais an important Illustrator...
This time the stamps show us the Guimarães Castle, the Knight in Battle is Gonçalo Mendes da Maia (O Lidador) , the lady with a wood stick is the Aljubarrota Baker Lady, the man with the Law Book is Dr. João das Regras and the man in the Yellow portrait is Dr. João Pinto Ribeiro...the battle also represented is the Battle of Montijo...
1927 "Independence (2nd Series)" (15) [Des (Alberto Sousa 2c)(Alfredo Roque Gameiro 3c,32c)(Alfredo Morais 5c,40,4$50)][Engr (George Harrison)(Norman Broad)][Recess (Thomas De La Rue, London)] Sc(422,...,436)

Starting now with the Angola'n stamps,we stumbled into one of those series that repeated itself for every single one of the colonies....it is the Marquis de Pombal Series...

These are Postal Tax due stamps, and we will find here again the work of foreign Artists... The design was from Hugo Fleury , an employee of  Waterlow and Sons...The engraving was at charge of J.A.C. Harrison (1st and 2nd stamps) and G. Fairweather (3rd stamp) and the Printing was made by Waterlow...

Angola 1925 "Marquis de Pombal / Tax due stamps" (3) [Des (Hugo Fleury)][Engr (JAC Harrison)][G. Fairweather)][Recess (Waterlow and Sons)] Sc(RAJ1,...,RAJ3)

This is a series from 1938 and it is about the President's visit to Angola, but the design of the stamp itself represent something we, Portuguese call "Padrão" , that is a marble or Stone Column with the Cross in the top and Portugal's Coat of Arms just below... these signs were left behind whenever the ships arrive to a new land, just to mark the presence of Portuguese Navigators...it is a beautiful stamp ,this time Designed , engraved and printed by Bradbury Wilkinson....
Angola 1938 "1st visit of Portugal's President to the Colonies" (3) [Recess (Bradbury Wilkinson)] Sc(292,293,294)

I had already almost all the 10 stamps of this AIR series but some years have passed without the missing 8$50 and 12$50 stamps appear in my World...recently I the entire series ,just to have those two stamps... it is a very beautiful series, now clearly [Litho] printed, like almost all of the Portuguese Colonies stamps of the 50's 60's and 70's....
Angola 1965 "AIR MAIL" (10) [Litho (Casa da Moeda)] Sc(C26,...,C35)

Now I have another AIR MAIL series, this time from Cape Verde... it is also another of those common designs repeated in the colonies...

A series from 1938 where we return to the foreign British influence in the printing and engravings... The illustrations are from Arnaldo Ressano Garcia, a Career Military that when had the time , published many illustrations and caricatures in several Magazines ... it is a beautiful design with printing of Bradbury Wilkinson...
Cape Verde 1938 "AIR MAIL / Portuguese Colonial Empire" (9) (Des (Arnaldo Ressano Garcia)][Recess (Bradbury Wilkinson)] Sc(C1,...,C9)

Another of those series where just 2 or 3 stamps were missing.. well, they appeared and finally it is a new entry to the collection...a fact we must have in consideration is that the printing of these stamps is not the best ,because there are several problems with the correct position of the colors that often appear misplaced in the design...
A interesting thing I have to say is that in the group of stamps that my father left me , there were 2 envelopes full of stamps of the $50 and 2$50 values... I never understand the real reason of this fact and I don't find anything special in the catalogs,so I remain in total ignorance about the real intentions of this strange stock of stamps...maybe one day I will find something interesting...
Cape Verde 1968 "Products of Cape Verde" (10) [Des (José de Moura)][Litho] Sc(345,...,354)

Well, we reached the end of this small post... hope You like it..!

Goodbye

Some Years

New Entries

Today I have some stamps from Cape Verde Islands and Mexico...

I lived for seven years in the Cape Verde Island of Sal..My parents both worked there and I have some good memories of the Island and above all , of the good people  that always welcomed us.. so, it is not strange that I recently bought a small lot of Classic Cape Verde stamps.. there are more stamps in this lot , but I will not show them today... Many more are already in the collection, and so they cannot be shown here in the blog.. If you find it , please buy the beautiful 1948 "Cape Verde Landscapes" series...

This is a small mix of different series ... first I wish to say that the classification of these classical Cape Verde stamps is relatively easy , if we compare it with the same designs , but issued in Portugal, where there are many different papers to consider ... with these stamps you must pay attention mainly to the perforation...
1) this is a stamp of the "Crown type" series.. there are two series with this design , and the 2nd present us new values and colors, so there isn't much confusion... each of the series have two possible perforations (12.5 and 13.5) and the stamps are printed in flat, thin or medium paper...
1877 "Crown type" (9) [Des/Engr (Augusto Fernando Gerard)][Typo (Casa da Moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(3)
2) 3) These are stamps representing King D. Luis I...the stamps are [Typo] printed and present us the characteristic 'embossed portrait' of the early series of Portuguese stamps...the series has also two possible perforations (again 12.5 and 13.5) and porcelain paper, medium or tick is used ...
1886 "King D. Luis I" (9) [Des/Engr (Frederico Augusto de Campos)][Typo / Embossed (Casa da Moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(19,21)
4) 1893 "Newspaper stamp" (1) [Des/Engr (Eudócio Cesar Azedo Gneco)][Typo (Casa da Moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(P1)

Now we have two series sharing the same design of king D. Carlos I ... it is a beautiful design by Eugene Mouchon.. it is by many considered one of the most accomplished Portuguese stamps of those days...1) these first group of 3 stamps is from the original series... it  present us the two 5r shades (orange/1st and Yellow orange/2nd) and the blue 50r.. the stamps have perforation 11.5..
1898 "King D. Carlos I" (15) [Des/Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo (Casa da moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(37,37,44)
2) After the implementation of the Republic in 1910, a overprint "Republic" was applied to the original stamp, and new stamps were issued in 1911.. here are presented some beautiful items like the 115r Orange brown on Rose..
1911 "Overprint 'Republic' on 1898 King D. Carlos I" (15) [Des/Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo (Casa da Moeda, Lisbon)] Sc(85,94,95,98,99)

These two small group have overprints and surcharges on stamps of the first D. Carlos I series issued in 1893 ( the Mouchon Series of King D. Carlos I was the 2nd series , issued in 1898)...The original stamps of 1893 were surcharged in 1902 and overprinted 'Republica' in 1915 [ 1st Group ] ... after this , they were again surcharged in cents (the first surcharge was still in the Monarchic currency 'Reis' ) in 1922 [2nd Group ]...
1)2)3) 1915 Overprint 'Republica' on '1902 Surcharged '1893 King D. Carlos I'' (6) [Des/Engr (Manuel Diogo Neto)][Typo] Sc(189,190,192)
4)5)6) 1922 Surcharge in Cents over ' 1915 Overprint 'Republica' on '1902 Surcharged '1893 King D. Carlos I'' (4) [Des/Engr (Manuel Diogo Neto)][Typo] Sc(202,203,204)

Group of 4 king D. Manuel II stamps overprinted 'Republica' ...
1912 "Overprint 'Republica' on King D. Manuel II " (12) [Des (Domingos Alves do Rego)][Typo] Sc(100,107,110,111)

MEXICO
-------------------
I have already done 2 or 3 posts with Mexico stamps.. the stamps were mainly from the classic period, highly recommendable because of the many interesting features present.. overprints, surcharges, papers, etc.. now i have same stamps the 30's and others from the 70's,80's and 90's.. Let us start by talking about the great Mexican Air Mail series from the 30's.. very beautiful designs sometimes linked to the great past of Mexico (with it's AZTECS  heritage..).. the most part of these series are [Recess] printed, what make's me very happy.. unfortunately I don't know yet the names of the designers, but i think that with time everything will 'come out to the light'...!

This is one of the first Air Mail stamps from Mexico... in 1922 this same design was issued with two different colors[Blue and Red Brown (C1) and dark blue & claret (C1a)] and without wmk...later , in 1927, this stamp was issued , and it is again the Dark blue 6 claret variety, but with Watermark.. this 2nd issue of the same design has a very small cv , but the 1922 series has higher cv's...
The same design is again used in the next issue of 1928 with two more stamps of 25c with different colors( one of them presented before...)
1927 "AIR MAIL" (2) [Recess][Wmk] Sc(C2a)

This is another Air Mail series from 1934/1935...it is not so beautiful as others of this same time frame, and the stamps are not in the best of shapes, so they don't look much appealing...it is again a wmk series, with perf 10x10.5 or 10.5x10.. the series represent some Aztec Mythological creatures, temples and Idols..
1934/1935 "AIR MAIL" (9) [Recess] Sc(C65.C66.C69,C70,C71)

series from 1939, with a modern design (unknown designer) .. it is sad that the postmark contributed to the bad overall condition of the stamp...
1939 "AIR MAIL" (3) [Photo] Sc(100,102)

These are stamps from a Gigantic series about the Exportation's of Mexico... the series has 90 stamps divided by 6 sub series with stamps issued from 1975 to 1992... It has a very modern design developed in the end of the 60's and during the 70's ;  the designer of this great series is Rafael Davidson... some of the stamps share the same designs ...there are many ways to distinguish the stamps, but we can say that classifying this series is a hard task... Wmk's, perforations , the presence of distinctive lines in some stamps ( the existence of these lines creates two distinct types of stamps) , sometimes different papers are used, etc... it is not my favorite kind of design , but  It is without doubts , a series that I would like to have complete...
1975/1992 "Mexico Exporta" (90) [Des (Rafael Davidson)(Photo)

New Entries

some Vatican FDC's and MS's from North Korea, Afghanistan, Cape Verde Islands and Belgium Congo are part of today's "Menu"...

MS's are part of the Philatelic item's that have increased importance during last years, and we have reached a point where almost every series that is issued come with a Souvenir Sheet...
I don't give great "attention" to these items , but I recognize that some of them are very beautiful and collecting them could open "New Worlds" to Philately... I think that the appearance of this items in postal issues is normal and only represent an additional field of interest to the collectors (Postal Services have recognized this fact and they bet , some early than others ,in this new product..); so, we can say that SS's are part of the normal flow of things [The Economic perspective of the Postal company's, and the collectors needs and like's...].. What I consider to be "against" the flow , are two recent (the 1st beginning in the 80's until now and the 2nd beginning in the last decade...) Philatelic events : the "Explosion" and growing of "Empty stamps" (My last post...) and the incomprehensible appearance of Photography as main source of pictures , instead of the old, correct and desired bet in Art ... both of them are killing Philately by killing the collectors interest in collecting ...
How can We understand this Global Suicide of Postal Services??...[an analogy can be made with the sad pictures we often view of large groups of wales that suddenly direct themselves to land.. and die..!] ..I think that to reach objectives totally extra Philately, Postal Services are being obliged to follow this way ...( they should know that Today's Good Economic Result could lead to Tomorrow's Bankruptcy if not consistent with the market's demands ..) It is imperative that something is done to change this...
