New Entries

Another post  from more than one country is necessary to show small groups of stamps that are important to the conclusion of series or are somehow related to stamps I showed in previous posts..Denmark and Monaco were the chosen countries..

Some more stamps of this beautiful series from 1891.. The personality represented is Prince Albert I of Monaco. the stamps were engraved by Eugene Mouchon , as we know one of the Engraving Masters of those days...
Monaco 1891 "Prince Albert I" (21) [Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo] Sc(11,12,17,22)

in a previous post with Denmark stamps, I said that only 5 were missing to complete this great, great King Christian X series.. now only two of them are missing... it will be a happy day, when I finish this series..
Denmark 1913/1928 "King Christian X" (35) [frame Des (G. Hellmann)][Engr (Chr. Danielsen)][Typo (ore values] Sc(107,111,122a)

with other stamp I already had, the series is completed.. there are two posterior stamps with change in the colors ..
Denmark 1920 "Recovery of Northern Schleswig" (3) [Des (V. Andersen)][Typo] Sc(156,158)

[Left] two more , and still one missing in this other King Christian X series...
Denmark 1930 "60th Anniversary of King Christian X" (10) [Des (Axel Peder Jensen)][Engr (Johannes  Britze)][Recess] Sc(216,218)
[Right] The series is now completed..Denmark 1945 "75th Birthday of King Christian X" (3) [Des (Viggo Bang)][Recess (Sven Ewert)] Sc(294,295)

Let us now make a first pause to talk about this series... I have these stamps for a long time , but classifying them seem to me nothing that would give great amounts of pleasure..but when I thought of making a post with other Denmark stamps, classifying them was the natural step...
The 6 stamps presented above are from the [Typo] series of 1927.. some years later an Engraved and [Recess] Printed series was issued, now with some new particularities.. Unfortunately I have only a small number of these engraved stamps, but with time they will come...

I) Each one of the stamps of this 2nd Series, could be of Type 1 or type 2

Left) Type 1) there are two columns of points between the left frame and the main Sail...

Right) Type 2 ) there is only one column of points between the left frame and the main sail...

Left ) A) the number of Pearls in the Crown is (11,7) in each side of the Cross

Right ) B) the number of Pearls in the Crown is (9,6) in each side of the Cross

C) there is no hook in the end of the main Sail arm (I do not know Sail terminology..)

D) there is a hook in the end of the main Sail Arm.. [ I don't have any stamp of this variety to show..]

All type 2 stamps are BC and all Type I stamps are A...(they could be C or D)
now I will show the small quantity of stamps I've got..(Type 1AC [5])(Type 2BC [2])

The series could be much more appealing if all the options were open and we could combine type 1 with A,B,C,D and type 2 also with A,B,C,D... the number of combinations would be greater and also great would be the joy of the collectors...
I know that there are several of these ' projected ' series done for the Benefit of collectors , since early days , but my question is "Why they don't make them  anymore ???"..
Denmark 1927 "Caravel and Crown (Solid Background)" (6) [Des (Axel Peder Jensen)][Typo] Sc(192,...,197)
Denmark 1933/1940 "Caravel and Crown (Background with dots [.])" (17) [Des (Axel Peder Jensen)][Engr (Johannes Britze)][Recess] Sc(232,234,236,237,238,238D,238J)[ Type IAC][Type IIBC]

This is a series that works like a Showcase for engravers... in fact in this 15 stamp series, we can appreciate the work of 11 different Engravers...each one of them brings his own technical view of the 'business'... You can see clearly the differences in the Engraving of the Backgrounds and of the Cars themselves.....
the series is not complete (there are 2 stamps missing..) , and I want to highlight that I don't like Automobiles, I don't have one and I don't want to..! at the same time i know that this is one of the most famous Car series, and all the collectors of this Topic would like to have it...so I show them with the conscience that  some of these stamps are really Art works, in the Design and above all in the Engraving...[ it is a very accessible series...]

starting from the Left/Righ, Up/Down:
1) Des/Engr (Hertenberger) 2)Combet  3) Béquet 4) Monvoisin 5) Charles Mazelin 6) Des (Spitz) Engr (Pheulpin) 7) Charles Mazelin 8) Des (Raoul Serres Engr (C. Halley) 9) Des (Raoul Serres Engr (C. Halley) 10) Des (P. Lambert) Engr (Guillame) 11) Des (Betemps) Engr (P. Lambert) 12) Des (B. Minne) Engr (Charles Mazelin) 13) Des (B. Minne) Engr (Bequet)

Monaco 1967 "25th Motor Grand Prix, Monaco" (15)

Now , I want to present you some of the work of Jakub Obrovsky . He is the designer of all these Czechoslovakia stamps from 1919...the 1st 3 stamps represents in an allegorical form the Independence of Czechoslovakia, with the bohemian Lion, breaking the chains to freedom....The mother and child stamps are from a series about the Legion's Orphan child's... Obrovsky was the designer of one more series from 1920  , representing the Days of Reconstruction after the War, with Agriculture and Science working side by side (all of this again in a Allegorical form...) The 2nd series is [Photo] printed and the printing work is very bad with a great lack of detail and great general blurriness....
Czechoslovakia 1919 "1st Anniversary of the Independence" (3) [Des (Jakub Obrovsky)][Typo] Sc(B124,B125,B126)
Czechoslovakia 1919 "Czechoslovak Legion Orphan Child's" (3) [Des (Jakub Obrovsky)][Photo] Sc(B127,B128,B129)

hope you like this post... I am not in one of those 'talking' days, so it is a smaller than usual post...

The Rope and the Sail

New Entries

Today we will have another post about the beautiful stamps of Kenya, Uganda & Tanganyika... This time , some stamps of King George V...
In the end of the post , some Personality stamps from Czechoslovakia...

Kenya , Uganda and Tanganyika

I will present the stamps individually , because they all are beautifully designed and worked...

1935/1937 "King George V" (14) [Perf 14 (5c,50c,1s,2s) 13(15c,20c,30c) 12 x 13(10c)][Des (5c,50c ?)(10c A. Ross)(15c,1s,2s G. Gil Holmes)(20c R.C. Luck)(30c R.N. Ambasana)][Typo (10c) Recess (De La Rue & Co. Ltd , London) (all others)] Sc(47,48,49,50,51,52,54,55)

In the 5c stamp there are two main varieties... I) the most common, and the one represented in the picture above , where you can see that the rope doesn't touch the sail.. let me specify that it is the leftmost rope that we must see.. II) in the other variety  , the rope actually touch the sail .. in this case the stamp values more ;  but if it has  Perf 12 x 13 (instead of 14) and Type I) , then it ' jumps' to a CV £ 550 (Used).. it is so difficult to have one of this stamps , that I prefer to joke with all of this , but I am beginning to give a more careful look to all the spare stamps....

1935 "Silver Jubilee" (4) [Perf 14 x 13.5][Des (H. Fleury)][Recess (De La Rue Co. Ltd,London)] Sc(42,...,45)

In other post about the KUT stamps , I have already presented the 20c stamp of this series .. in this series we also have some small particularities to look for... I have any of them to present you , so I cannot document them , and to be here talking about little dots and lines without presenting the right place where they should fit , it is a 'empty' exercise...
There are houses build for comfort, cars build for speed, and there are also stamps build for Detail..! Commonwealth had many of these stamps where "the scarce simply ' pop up ' from the common" in a blink of an eye..!! As Ferrari's of Precision , these kind of stamps cannot be traded or exchanged without a closer look to every detail available... Of Course a specialized catalog is always necessary...!!

1949 "75th Anniversary of the UPU" (4) [Perf 14 x 13.5 (20c) 13 x 13.5 (1s) 11 x 11.5 (30c,50c)][Des (Waterlow and Sons Limited , London 20c,1s)(Bradbury Wilkinson  30c,50c)][Recess (WS 20c,1s) Typo (BW 30c,50c)] Sc(94,...,97)

Czechoslovakia

It is known to the few of you who follow this blog, that I like Personality stamps.. many of our Hobby friends don't like them , because sometimes they are not beautiful or are a boring kind of stamps, I don't know ,there are many ways to dislike Personality stamps..!.
I think that they are one of the most effective ways of immortalize someone... and in the Czech case they have immortalized many people and they done it with admirable artistry, with their great Designers and Engravers...
Many of the definitive series that were and still are issued by the various National Post Office's , could be classified as Personality stamps... They honored the Kings or Presidents or distinct figures of society .. what should be considered a Personality stamp is something to be 'asked' and 'cleared'...

1948/1949 "President Klement Gottwald" (6) [Perf 12.5][Des (Jindra Schmidt)][Recess (Jindra Schmidt)] Sc(363,364,365,366)

still in 1948 a 30K SS was issued and in 1949 a 10k was issued..
I present the 15h stamp, but I cannot find the correct Scott code... it is still missing me..(It's there allright, but I cannot find it..!)

1949 "Poets" (6) [Perf 14][Photo] Sc(374,...,377)

There are two more stamps in the series ( that are already in my collection) , with Perf 12.5 and they are Recess stamps..
No design data of these stamps... if you know something , please contact me... I still don't have a Czech Catalog...

1945/1947 "President's" (16) [Perf 12 x 12.5 (60h,3K) 14 (1.60K)][Des (Jindra Schmidt)][Recess (Jindra Schmidt)(60h,3K)][Photo (1.60k)] Sc(294,303,297)

The personality in Focus is President Edvard Benes ... This series could be considered as a all or as 3 different series... I prefer the first hypotheses ...The series has 3 different designs from 3 different Personalities... President Masaryk , President Benes and General Milan Stefánik
It is also divided in two parts , one issued from 1945 to 1947 (12 stamps) (Recess / Perf 12 x 12.5) and other only in 1945 ( 4 stamps) (Photo / Perf 14)..

This is an older stamp, representing Czechoslovakia breaking chains to Freedom...
As you can see the upper right stamp is damaged, and all the block has a large hinge ..

1920/1925 "Various Designs" (10) [Perf 14][Des ?][Typo] Sc(87)

Self Portrait.?!?..

Before starting the post itself , and start showing the stamps I have today , I like to tell you something i have discovered last night... ; one of the stamps of the 1954 "Profession" series from Czechoslovakia that I used in my last post , was designed by Cyril Bouda , a Master Illustrator... if You put side by side , a photo of Bouda and the stamp , we notice that it is the Artist itself that goes "riding" the train, and the stamp is nothing more than a Self Portrait..
It is sourly a know fact [ by the Czeck Post personal and the Engraver ]  but I didn't realize it until now , so I think it could be a fact of interest...

I will begin with some stamps from China PRC..the stamps are from a beautiful definitive series from 1981/1983 "China Scenery"

when I was ' surfing ' the Net , trying to find available data for Chinese stamps, I noticed that prices of the stamps from the beginning of the 80's are starting to rise, with some commemorative series already at high prices.. I think that we have to live with this fact , and eventually all stamps from the 80's will reach higher prices , due to the increasing demand..
[Des] This beautiful landscapes were designed by Chen Xiaocun and  Jiang Weijie.. I managed to get all the data I want but in this particular case , I cannot specify what stamps have been the work of each of the Artists ( same thing with the engravers..)

The rest of this post is dedicated to Colombia stamps.. I want to highlight the influence of some British Printing Houses in this period of time of Colombian Philately... Company's like Waterlow and sons, Perkins Bacon & Co. and Thomas De La Rue capitalize most of the work from the early days  until the 30's , 40's..

This first stamp I have to present , is damaged , I know (!) but it is beautiful...!! I don't know what is the purpose of the Hand writing , but it ruins the stamp (At least that's what I think..).
the stamp, showing us the Tequendama Waterfalls , belongs to series (2) 1917 "Landscapes (??)"
For these Colombian stamps , I could not manage to get Designers and engravers data... in this case , even the Printing is unknown .
