Iran (4th Post)

New Entries

In one of my last posts I talked about a new lot of Iranian stamps I bought recently.. it has classic stamps, from the early days and modern stamps of the 60's and 70's...
we all know that most of the classic stamps are portrait or Arms stamps... all these Iranian stamps, like many other stamps have Arabic labels, and we should know that the writing of Arabic Manuscripts is an Ancient Art cultivated for many many hundreds of years in some of the older Universities of the world...so, it is not a surprise that we find spectacular labels in some of these stamps... the real surprise appeared with the mix of modern graphic design with this ancient Art in the 70's , where we can find some fantastic stamps, not only because of their creativity but specially due to its simplicity ..
Back in the West ,postage stamps were gaining a lot with the Boom of the Graphical Design , that in this time was exploring Logo's, new Typing Labels, colors, etc but it was a little surprising that in Iran the Boom was also taking place, mixed with the local culture and achieving high levels of creativity, as we will see..

let us start with some stamps of our friend Eugene Mouchon.

this is a portrait of Shah Muzaffer ed-Din designed and engraved by Mouchon... I already had the opportunity of showing one of these stamps in a older post , where we could see the Artist's signature at the center of the stamp...it is a really beautiful stamp with very nice portrait , frames and labels....despite the fact of being all identical stamps, we are in presence of stamps of two different series...the original one , from 1897 , (3rd and 4th) and a New colors series from 1899 (1st,2nd and 5th) ...
1897 "Muzaffer ed-Din Shah" (7) [Des/Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo (J. Enschedé)] Sc(114,117)
1899 "Muzaffer ed-Din Shah" (7) [" "]["] Sc(145,146,149)

The 1900's brought a period that extended itself until the late 20's where we had a great number of overprints and surcharges, some of them really spectacular...

continuing with the same design,we find two of many other overprints that usually were all hand-stamped locally during the first years of the period of time I have mentioned above...
The first of them to be issued was printed at the top of the stamp and was originally from the year of 1901... the Carmine Red 1Kr stamp was initially hand-stamped with a blue overprint , and them in 1902 he was printed with another one in black at the bottom of the stamp...
Some of these overprinted stamps reached high cv being the Mint stamps at the top of the list (my old SG catalog 2006 Edition)
1902 "Surcharge and Overprint on 1899 Muzaffer ed-Din shah" Sc(209a,188,???)

I think that now is a good time to start our small visit to the 70's of Iran's Philately...

This is a first series from 1972 , and to speak freely , the 6r stamp has nothing special to show us except the symbol of the Tehran Film Festival that will appear a couple more times in this post...but when we look to the 8r stamp we immediately see many colors, the same symbol and various graphic elements very well combined as a oval shaped figure, doted lines in colored sequences, everything very well imagined and the final result lead us to the Poster world, with a stamp that could have been used as a poster , in a larger format..
I wanted to have more detailed images but experience told me that to much detail would blur the picture...these are all [photo] printed stamps ,so a low resolution scan was advisable...
1972 "1st International Film Festival, Tehran" (2) [Photo] Sc(1642,1643)

All the stamps from this period present large and complex wmks , and I cannot , even in my remote dreams ,know what they represent ...
Talking now about these two stamps, I can say that they were issued to commemorate the same event in the consecutive years of 1972 and 1973...the 'stand out' picture represent the Power of the Shah's Monarchy over different backgrounds and colors..the blue background represent us several Industries and Social sectors ,repeated one or more times, but the Orange/Yellow background of 73 is for sure much more imaginative for the time frame We were living...it is one of those designs that appeal to our vision to see different images in orange or yellow...very nice (of course, in our days this is common , but in the 70's it was not...!)
1972 "National Festival of Art and Culture, Tehran" (1) [Photo] Sc(1681)
1973 "National Festival of Art and Culture, Tehran" (1) [Photo] Sc(1725)

This is a series of stamps from 1973 , with two (iranian..!) normal sized stamps, one large sized stamp and a MS...the focus of the series is the 10th anniversary of the so called "White Revolution" led by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi initiated in 1963 and lasted until 1978...the larger stamp and MS are both replicas of the 1r and 2r stamps.. both these stamps present us images made of different positioning of 12 geometric figures...why 12?? I don't know , but there is a explanation, for

sure...! the 6r stamp is a very large stamp (7cm x 9cm)  with the same vignette as the 1r but surrounded by large Arabic Labels...

The 10r is a MS with the same Arabic Labels..

1973 "10th Anniversary of the Shah's White Revolution" (3+MS) [Photo] Sc(1693,...,1696)

Two more stamps from 1973; the first one , at our left , represents a International Railway Conference in Tehran, and references to trains are obvious because of the presence of a railway forming  a spherical illusion, created to unite the world in it's center...it is a good and well accomplished idea giving form to a very simple stamp...
the stamp at the right is for me the simplest ,the most creative, the most imaginative and the Best stamp of this post !! if we see it without a closer view (clicking it !!!) ,there is nothing special about it, just a strong combination of Reds, Yellows and Dark Brown...after clicking the picture we see that the red center is made of letters and numbers, lots of them..! the stamp is about Literacy! The world Literacy Day! Beautiful... The Artist remembered to built a strange Earth , where it's center feeds volcanoes that vomit their 'educational Lava' igniting all the ignorance in it's way, transforming it into knowledge and literacy...in other simplest view , it just represents the Educational Fire..EXCELLENT!
I think this kind of creativity isn't very common, even among Countries usually at the front of the Graphical Design Improvement and Modernization.movements (like Germany, the US, and others..)
1973 "International Railway Conference, Tehran" (1) [Photo] Sc(1704)
1973 "World Literacy Day" (1) [Photo] Sc(1725)

Something very visible in this post is the lack of data about the designers and it is really something that I am not proud of... a reflex of that is the fact of my difficulty to build and write this post...I began to write it in the beginning of May, but a sudden lack of will to continue it  devoured minutes , hours and days full of pure Philatelic Emptiness... Accomplishment without Will is not possible.!.

There is something in these stamps that remind me Bond, James Bond!! I think the labels are similar to some others used in Bond movies... nice stamps.
1973 "7th Dhiraz Arts Festival" (2) [Photo] Sc(1722,1723)

Every time I see this "geometric" background ,with designs inside, I remember one of the Computer games that I really enjoyed playing in the 80's... it was the "Bandit Kings of Ancient China I" from Koei Co.... it was one of the first works of this company that soon would be one of the Monsters of Computer Gaming...what impressed me the most was the fact of the complete game fits in a 1mb disk, and has Battle boards with similar backgrounds representing different terrains (mountains, rivers, sea, weather, military units, etc..) and where the game reacts fantastically to the user movements.. trust me , I played it for a long time , and it was always surprising..!! all of this to talk about a 2 stamp series with not much to present except triggering Good memories..!
1973 "5th Anniversary of the UN Volunteers" (2) [Photo] Sc(1733,1734)

In this case, the design is related to something we all should know : the bonds between us make us collectively stronger and we could remember the strong words of the 60's in the 'Canned Heat' song  "Together we stand, Divided we fall".. The chain clearly represent the benefits of Cooperatives and of the Associative Movement... but in the end , I would have chosen another item to represent these bonds between people, because the chain could represent the benefits of a strong link, but also represents the danger of prison or imprisonment (and there is no form of prison more effective than Hunger).. so it is a nice stamp with a strong message but ambiguous (because the Artist is creating and eliminating the chain in the same message..) at the same time...
1974 "Farm Cooperatives Day" (1) [Photo] Sc(1786)

The usual 'uniqueness' of this strange Animal used as Graphic Logo of the Tehran International Cinema Festival , is again the main attraction of this stamp that plays with all the 4 colors presented , and the final result is a appealing stamp, once more using the simple tools that Graphic Design offer us.. nice work..!
1974 "3rd International Film Festival, Tehran" (1) [Photo] Sc(1847)

A very colorful 3 stamp series commemorating the New Year Festival.. I tried to understand the message of the stamps but it was impossible for me to decipher it...perhaps they are just paintings, colorful paintings ,with flowers, representing the birth of the new year, the Spring, .. perhaps..!
1975 "New Year Festival" (3) [Photo] Sc(1857a)

To end the post , I have a beautiful stamp that is a tribute to Teachers and their long days always spent being harassed by hordes of spoiled brats that only want to play games, see videos, talk on the mobile, take 'selfies',or just be modern children..
It is without doubts a profession that requires a lot of daily preparation, total dedication and many ,many patience , perseverance and Hard work... A Long Life for all the Teachers !!
1977 "Teacher's Day" (1) [Photo] Sc(1951)

It was a difficult post ...
Well, A long life for You also.!.

Italy Stamps [6th Post] / Iran Stamps [3rd Post]

New Entries

To begin this post and before some talking about one Iranian stamp, let's have a quick look to 3  Famous Italian series from the beginning of the XX Century...

I would like to start with stamps from one series that is in fact "Two".!!... I'm talking of a group of 4 different designs , belonging in their original form to the 1911 series of the Jubilee of the Kingdom of Italy.. however, just one of them is part of that series, and it is presented above... it is a beautiful (the other are also Master works..) work of Augusto Sezanne and the engraving is as usual, a great work of Alberto Repettati ... the other 3 stamps (presented below) , are part of a surcharged issue of 1913...
1911 "Jubilee of the Kingdom of Italy" (4) [Des (Augusto Sezanne)][Engr (Alberto Repettati)][Recess] Sc(119)

Great illustrations, all of them very classic and "old School" , of Enzo Morelli and Victorio Grassi...
Just to highlight a small detail, I now ask you to notice the surcharged label "2" in the 3 stamps...You will easily spot the presence of similar labels in the 5 and 10c stamps, and a different one in the 15c stamp....well, in fact , together with this difference there is another one that has to do with the spacing between labels (larger, close to 13.5mm, in the first two stamps and close to 12mm in the other one...)..just for example, I could say that the 15c stamp with wider spacing (13.5mm) has a higher cv...
1913 "Surcharge on 'Jubilee of the Kingdom of Italy'" (3) [Des (Enzo Morelli 5c)(Victorio Grassi 10c,15c)][Engr (Alberto Repettati)][Recess] Sc(126,...,128)

from 1921 we have a series commemorating the 6th Death Centenary of Dante Alighieri...
The stamps were designed by Giuseppe Cellini and [Typo] printed in Rome...despite the fact of the nonexistence of any remark in the catalogs about the better or worst centering of the stamps, it became very clear after seeing these particular 3 stamps, that well centered stamps were perhaps not so common...
1921 "600th Anniversary of Dante's Death" (3) [Des (Giuseppe Cellini)][Typo (Rome)] Sc(133,...,135)

Now  our stamps are from a 1926 series  with focus in the life and work of St. Francis...among the illustrations , we have the Vision of St. Francis, the Monastery of St. Damien, the Assisi Monastery and the Death of St. Francis...there are 5 different illustrations ,, each one of them designed by a different Artist...the first 3 stamps are [Litho] printed and the last 3 one's are [Recess] printed... all the engravings , are again work of Alberto Repettati...The 20c,40c and 60c present us  a Wmk and perforation 14... all the other values have no Wmk and two possible perforations (13.5 or 11)
Many of the Commemorative stamps from this early period of the XX century are very beautiful... In fact we can say that all this period together with the one that starts in 1930 with the works of Corrado Mezzana are part of some of the High Points of European Philately...
1926 "700th Death Anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi" (6) [Des (Duilio Cambellotti 20c)(Giovanni Guerrini 30c,5L+2.50L)(A. Blasi 40c)(A. Rizzini 5L)(A. Del Neri 60c)][Engr (Alberto Repettati)][Litho (from woodcuts of Blasi 20c,40c,60c)][Recess (30c1.25L,5L+2.50L)] Sc(178,...,183)

Those who already know me better, for reading some of my previous posts, know that whenever I find a Mouchon stamp , I always share it with you , because it is not easy to track the Artist's life and Work...
The stamp I have to show you now is from Iran and from 1899, in my opinion part of his best period (1895 to 1900)

It is a very beautiful design from a series of 7 stamps with values from 1kr to 50kr...the frame work is very nice, the portrait also, a great stamp.!!.. SG only talks of engraving work by Mouchon ,but I think that we are in presence of a more complete work of Designing and engraving... if you notice, at the bottom center of the stamp, right below the label "Postes Persanes" , we can find Mouchon's signature ...

I think that he wouldn't have place it with Central notoriety if he wasn't the author of all the work involved...
The illustration itself represents the Shah of Iran Muzaffer-Ed Din Shah Qajar (Reigned 1896/1907)
You can see that the stamp is damaged right in the center, below the Shah's neck , but it is the only one I've got,for now...!
1899 "Shah of Iran Muzaffer-Ed Din Shah Qajar" (7) [Des/Engr (Eugene Mouchon)][Typo(Typo (J. Enschedé, Haarlem)] Sc(147)

well, after another small post , and ending with one more Mouchon stamp, I will say that next time we will be travelling through the Middle East...

Three Women...

New Entries

This will be a post different from the last ones, with  stamps of 4 countries...today I will not present many technical data about the stamps, some because I don't have it  but other because I am currently with a little time problem...
let's begin with a series we all know...

Continuing the effort to have all the Commemorative's from the beginning until 1945, I bought this 1937 famous series..it is a beautiful series representing famous Generals of the Army and Navy, several famous boats and the US Army Academy at West Point..I will not present here the designers and engraver's data , as stated above..
USA 1937 "Army and Navy Heroes Series" (10) [Recess] Sc(785,...,794)

now for something Completely different , some stamps I bought recently...

I was wandering through the Net , when I saw this little group of Japanese Telegraph stamps.. I had for a long time a 15s stamp like the one presented here, but in lousy conditions... When I saw it, I immediately want to buy it.. so ,I bought them ,even with a repetition and an invalid imperforated stamp in the group... it was just to have that stamp... they are beautiful stamps with the usual beautiful cancel, and strangely ,after a quick look , I didn't find the codes in Scott catalog..

Japan 1895 "Telegraph Stamps" (10)[Typo] SAK(3TE,5TE,5TE,6TE,7TE,8TE)

in the same day , when I was visiting the seller's online shop,I found 3 more stamps of the "Men of culture Series"..as we know it is not a frequent series to see complete, and it is expensive , even when we are talking about used stamps..so I always buy those stamps I find occasionally...they are beautifully engraved and certainly good additions to any collection..
Japan 1949/1952 "Men of culture Series" (18) [Des (M. Kimura)][Engr (F. Watabe)][Recess] Sc(480,482,483)

some Classic stamps from Iran with a new "Lion and Sword" design , very usual in these early issues...I think these are the first classical stamps from Iran , that I show here in the blog..I must , when I have the money, invest a little more in these stamps because they are really beautiful.. the lion and the sword are together with a shining Sun in the Center, topped by a beautiful Crown and Arabic Labels...There are two series that share this same design, one from 1894 (1st group) and other from 1898 (2nd group)...same values have different colors in each of these two series , and this is an aspect that facilitates the classification...
1st Group) Iran 1894 "Lion and Sword" (11) [Typo] Sc(90,91,92)
2nd Group) Iran 1898 " (16) [Typo] Sc(105,108,110,111)

These are stamps from the first commemorative Series from Iraq.. it is a very beautiful series with designs of Iraq Culture, monuments and Landscapes...
As you know , I have another blog about stamp Designers..during the research for Biographical data from the Designers of this series , Miss Edith Cheesman and Mrs. C.C. Garbett, I found several aspects I think I should focus here...we are talking about a series from 1923 , and the first aspect that troubled me is why and how two British Women Designers could exist at the same time in Iraq and what was the relation between them..first I found some data about Miss Edith Chessman through the life of her brother Major Robert Cheesman..I found out that she traveled with her brother to Iraq and other places in the Middle East..He was already a famous Ornithologist, and made significant discoveries in the Arabian Peninsula.. about Mrs. C.C. Garbett I found nothing , except the fact that she was married to Mr. C. C. Garbett..this was the Central point to discover the relation between these two women..Both ,Mr. C.C. Garbet and Major Cheesman, were chosen by Sir Percy Cox, to help him in the establishment of the British Secretariat in Iraq..so there they were , with our two Designers in 1923, Iraq..
another aspect I like to emphasize is the fact that at the same time , another British woman was playing an important role in Iraq's History.. i'm talking about Gertrude Bell ... after reading her letters , I realized she was indeed a women ahead of her time , perhaps one of the most Powerful women of her days...
And now a challenge to Hollywood Producers...How about a movie about the life of Gertrude Bell.!??!.

Sorry for this long talk about my research , but I feel it was adequate..
Iraq 1923 "Various Designs" (13) [Des (Miss Edith Cheesman 0.5A,1A,4A,6A,8A)(Mrs. C.C. Garbett 2A,3A,1R)][Typo(Bradbury Wilkinson)1R][Recess (Bradbury wilkinson) others] Sc(1,...,9)

This post was a little shorter , but as I said before I was with a 'time' problem during the preparation of the post..

The stamp is from a series 20 "Ahmad Shah Qajar (1911/1913)"
it must be "Very frightening" (at least..) to be the ruler of Persia being just a child..!!
