Norway [4th Post ]

New Entries

Today's post will show us a nice group of [Recess] printed stamps from Norway... the series shown are not all completed ,but the number of stamps I have already justifies it's inclusion in this post...there will be a small amount of "Talk" and many images, presented in individual format for a better appreciation by You ,the viewer...

Apart from some rust spots, these are very nice stamps from a 1943 commemoration of the Norwegian Army...The engraving work is of De La Rue and it is very nice.. the only thing I have to say is about the 40ore stamp... it is definitely one of the PDSMID stamps ("Please don't see me in detail stamp") ... what look's like a beautiful stamp with some soldiers skiing in the snow , easily turns into a nightmare ,with very poor designed faces if we click to see the detailed image......it is a pity...! the 5ore stamp is missing ...
1943 "Norway's Army" (8) [Des (J. Bull)][Recess (De La Rue)] Sc(260,...,266)

Changing completely our time frame,we arrive into this beautiful, beautiful series..!! Scott divides it into several issues, but SG grouped all the 16 stamps in a 1977/1983 series...six more stamps to add to my "Have to buy them" section...the stamps are designed and engraved by 3 Artists and as you can see they are Marvelous!! a joy to the eyes..!
1977/1983 "Norway Scenery" (16) [Des (H. Welde 1k,1.30k)(K. Lokke-Sorensen 1.80k,3.50k)(S.Morken others)][Engr (H. Welde 1k,1.30k)(K.Lokke-Sorensen 1.80k,3.50k)(S. Morken others)][Recess] Sc(715,690,691,717,?,692,719,721,723,724)

These are stamps from a mall little series of 7 stamps...As You know I'm not a topic collector, but I think this is a very good series, with high standard Engravings...it is a series about Nordic Fauna and the missing stamps are also in my "Need to Get them" section...Unfortunately , I don't have the technical data for them,so I'll skip it..
1986/1990 "Nordic Fauna" (7) [Recess] Sc(877,879,880,881)

To end this very small post, I have 4 more stamps

1) 1989 "Manors" (2) [Des (F. Matheson)][Engr (A. Yttri)][Recess] Sc(950)
2)  1978 "75th Birthday of King Olav V" (2) [Des/Engr (K. Lokke-Sorensen)][Recess] Sc(731)
3) 1984 "300 Birth Anniversary of Ludvig Holberg (Writer)" [Des/Engr (K. Lokke-Sorensen)][Recess] Sc(847)
4) 1983 "150th Birth Anniversary of Jonas Lie (Writer)" (1) [Des/Engr (K. Lokke-Sorensen)][Recess] Sc(828)

I hope You have liked some of  these good engravings... next time , some stamps from Madagascar will enter the collection..

The Worker

New Entries

In our hobby , something we learn to value and cherish is the fact that sometimes a little "push" is needed to light this 'collector fire'... My father was always the motor that push me to this activity , but unfortunately, only his death made me awake to this dream of 'collecting stamps...' ; Yes, it is the Dream that keep us going , always trying to get more and more of our desired stamps.. the dream of having... As a Portuguese Poet once said "By the Dream We're going...".. Being a highly organized and disciplined man , my father have almost all the attributes necessary to be a Great collector... but the Dream was missing... I am a disorganized person , always starting new things and let them die in oblivion, but I have plenty of Dream... The beginning of this post is , more them remembering, a reflection about the "myth" that there are qualities needed to be a collector... I think that only dreaming is necessary to ' ignite and keep the flame burning...'

In today's post we have small groups of stamps from 5 countries..

CHINA
------
Since my infant days in Cape Verde that China has a great influence in my imagination..I remember that I had (when I was 5 or 6 years) a gold colored silk pajama filled with beautiful Chinese drawings , that ( in that time..) was one of my favorite objects.. All of this to say that to collect Chinese stamps , was a natural thing for me and almost a necessity...
I have here three stamps from a series of 4 and I decided to present it today , even if one is missing..

As in many other Chinese series, we must first distinguish the Original and the reprinted stamps... this is one of the more famous and classic , but I present it the same..
At right we have the small picture that is important to make this distinction... if just one line is presented between the worker's legs , we have the Original.. If there are two , we have a reprinted stamp.. so I have here three reprinted stamps, of lower value in comparison to the Original stamps...

1952 "Agrarian Reform" (4) [Des (Sun Chuanze)][Recess][Shanghai Daye Printing Company] Sc(128,129,130)

JAPAN
------
Beautiful series from 1949 , representing a ferry boat to Beppu , Kyushu Island..

Japan- is one of my favorite countries , as I said before , but I'm not going to make more considerations, leaving them to future posts.

1949 "Tourist Issue (Beppu Ferry)" (2) [Engr] Sc(446,447)

NORWAY
-------

For some time I wanted to present these stamps, but I have always delayed the presentation , because classifying these stamps is a hard task.. not only by the similarity in the design of several series , but because I don't have stamps from the first series ... I will try to explain why I think these 13 stamps belong to the same series...

  • all the stamps use the same letter for the labels
  • the Oval shaped figure has Vertical lines Background
  • the post horn central circle has white solid background..
  • the post horn ring has no background..
  • The Oval shaped figure frame has solid background.
  • .the post horn ring is continuous, without no interruptions... if there is  an interruption in this ring , immediately below the crown , we have an original stamp.. in this case we know that all the stamps are redrawn's..(left picture)

However , and after the 'match' of all these aspects I still have my doubts about the 7 ore stamp..

I would like very much that someone with more knowledge about these stamps, could help me knowing if I'm classifying them correctly .. ( remember that if the comment is helpful for the post , I will make update's to the post with those remarks...) ; of course , I almost forget the perforation that also is the expected..(14.5 x 13.5)

1910/1929 "Post Horn & Crown" (22) [typo] Sc(77,78,79,80,84,85,86,87,89,91,93,94,95)

MONACO
-------
there is nothing to say about  Monaco stamps , except the fact that the presence of so many Masters of the design and engraving in the production of their stamps was a 'bless' for this small Principality..

1926/1931 "Surcharge on stamps of 1924" (7) [Des (Henry Cheffer)][Typo] Sc(112)

Two stamps with the same design separated by 15 years!!..
[Left stamp] "Views of Monaco-New Values and Colors(1939/1946)" (35) [Des (Antonin Delzers)][Engr (Antonin Delzers)][Intaglio] Sc(168)

[Right Stamp] "Views of Monaco 1954 " (Des (Antonin Delzers)][Engr (Antonin Delzers)][Intaglio] Sc(319)

SPAIN
------

Now , and to finish , I will present some parts of sheets of stamps from Spain... they are all from stamps of the Definitive series "King Juan Carlos I 1994/1995" ; I already have these stamps individually , so I will not present any data from them.. these are only extra's for the collection...

The Games

New Entries

some stamps of Greece and Norway are presented in today's post...

here we have some of the lower value stamps of the series 12 1896 "1st International Olympic Games, Athens" ...this is a great series , a "must have" situation, I think for all stamp friends.., and one of the many works of the French Engraver Eugene Mouchon...these stamps look old , but without any visible damage..I have already 7 of the 12 stamps (of course, the one's that are still missing are the most expensive of the series...)
Perf: 13.5 x 14.5
SG(110,111,113) Sc(117,118,120)

some stamps of another very important series from Greece...This series has a curiosity ; from the 18 stamps of the series , 9 are "worked" (printed and engraved) by Bradbury & Wilkinson Ltd , and the other 9 are by Perkins, Bacon & Co Ltd..It is just one more example of the ( I think I could say it..!!) 'War' that existed in the end of XIX Century and first years of the XX between " a hand full " of  "Monster" Company's that produce stamps and Bank notes...[ I think that I have talked of this in another post..]..
The series is about the Independence War ; Greece , with help of England, France and the USA , fight to be an Independent State against the dominant Ottoman Empire.. Almost all the main personalities and leaders of the revolution, are represented in this series.
Perf: 12
SG(434,439,443) Sc(353,356,358)

two stamps from the series 6 "Centenary of Battle of Navarino (1927/1928)" ; the first stamp is the high value of the series.. there are two equal stamps , one with the Label 'Sir codrington' and another -- this one -- with 'Sir Edward Codrington'.. the stamps have some small rust spots, and are badly 'hurt' by Post marks.. the Battle of Navarino was a naval battle between the fleets  of the Ottoman empire and a Mix of Russian, English and French vessels.. The battle was won by the allied forces..
[Lithographed]..
Perf: 13 x 12.5
SG(430,431) Sc(341,342)

Let us now see the Norway stamps.

this stamp has a beautiful ultramarine blue..
from a series 3 1939 "Tourist Propaganda"
There are two similar series, one watermarked and the other not....
Perf: 13.5 x 13
SG(264) Sc(183)
Wmk

This is a stamp issued during the II World War ; the series present us some pictures of the Norway Armed Forces... it is a series 8 that I called "Armed Forces (1943/1945)"
[Engraved]
Perf: 12.5
SG(343) Sc(261)

from a series 3 1957 "International Geophysical Year"
Perf: 13 x 12.5
SG(467,469) Sc(355,357)

from the series 3 1935 "Norwegian Tourist Association Fund"

The Moose

New Entries

Today I have some Nordic stamps to present..

Some new additions to the set "King Christian X (1942/1946)" ..As I said before, these long series of King Christian X are a pleasure to collect...I have much more to offer in what is concerned with this series , but ... they are not new additions to the collection! I don't know if I already talk about this aspect, but this set is UnWaterMarked...
Let me explain my way of viewing stamp Topics... what information's can I get from this stamp?.
I would classify it in:
1) Known Personalities 2)Military Uniforms 3) Crowns 4) Royal Personality 5) Heraldry
This is a very personal subject , and there is no way of telling that We have the right view of things and the others don't... Like in life , everyone has it's one..

Now let us walk North to Norway

This is a series with beautiful stamps... We must view them in detail , because the background pictures are somehow "fainted"
It is a set of 11 1947 "Tercentenary of Norwegian Post Office" .. It is without doubts, my last addition to the "Most Wanted" folder...
Perf: 13
SG(385,386,387,389,392) Sc(280,281,282,284,287)

Great Ocean Landscape ruined by a Letter Postmark...it is very good the perspective and design of the Cirrus clouds, giving us that sense of depth..it is really a good picture!!
it is from a set 2 1965 "Centenary of Norwegian Red Cross"
Perf: 13
SG(580) Sc(474)

from a set 3 1939... there are two issues of these set.. One , the Original , of 1938, with Wmk and the other , this one of 1939, without Wmk.;  the set is called "Tourist Propaganda"
Perf: 13.5 x 13
SG(262) Sc(184)

To finish this post , I have a set from Sweden... We must consider it by two different ways.1) it is a complete set of stamps with vertical perforation.. 2) it is a incomplete set , if We mix the perforated stamps ( and there is one missing...)  with those of vertical perforation.. I prefer to classify it the second Way , because the pictures are the same and the Name of the series also ( the theme of the series..) remains..
The personalities represented are J.J.Berzelius (10;30) and Carl Von Linne (15;50;15)
From a set 6 1939 "Bicentenary  of the Swedish Academy of Sciences"
Perf: N/A x 12.5 and 12.5
Sc(293,294,295,296,297)
