The Eye

New Entries

I've had the opportunity in other posts of saying that to collect Egyptian stamps is an excellent choice, not only because of the richness of Egyptian's Culture and Historical Background, but also for the Country's Central role in one of the most disturbed regions of the world... I always talked about the necessity of keeping Politics away from our hobby , because it is a subject that blur our objectivity and sometimes kept us away from a clear analysis of a stamp..., so let them Live and Play their Dangerous 'Games', while we remain peaceful and relaxed citizens, with our "Stamp Medicine"..

I think that the best way to start this post is to divide the time frame we are used to deal with (1850/2015) ,in several small periods of the Egyptian History..
I will leave you a link to an Wikipedia Article about the Egyptian History.. It is very good and relatively detailed (specially in this period that We need to focus..)..
The stamps I have to enter my collection today, are mainly from the 40's and 50's .. They are all [Photo] printed stamps, some of them very beautiful....another detail that I want to focus is the total absence of data about Designers, except in the period from 1980 to our days...I will try to get some of this information from two or 3 Egyptian Internet Friends .. perhaps they know something..
One more time I wish to say to the Egyptian Authorities that it is not fair to make an internet site with all the information about Egyptian stamps (Excellent site.. ) and keep it only in Arabic Language..YOU ARE LEAVING ALL THE WORLD BEHIND..!!
so, in this post You only will find less words and more dedicated to the history and Culture presented in the stamps and not from any more technical domain..

These are two stamps representing King Farouk I , in Power since the Death of King Fuad I in 1936... these stamps are the two high values of the 2nd King Farouk I Definitive series, from 1937..
1) 1937/1946 "King Farouk I" (8) [Photo] Sc(239,240)

The main Cultural  subject represented in this series of 1937 is the Eye of Horus..it is a symbol with several meanings in many different fields of Knowledge..

The stamp represents King Fuad I that reigned over Egypt from 1922 to 1936..this is a commemorative stamp of his Death...

The first stamp show us a cotton plant and some cotton pickers, and the second  one is a commemorative of the life of General Ibrahim Pasha , one of the key figures of the Famous Naval Battle of Navarino.. It was in this small detail that I found a connection between the history of Egypt and Greece (another one...).. Yes, there is a 1927 Greek series of stamps about the Battle of Navarino, with the portraits of some important Personalities in the conflict and some designs about the battle itself and the reconquest of Key cities and places..Now , here it is one stamp with the portrait of the leading General of  the Egyptian Forces and a Battle Scene in the Background..

Sorry for the lack of Talk during this post ,but there is in fact , very little to talk about these stamps, except their obvious Richness in Historical and Cultural Facts and beliefs..the problem is that "Wikipedia" does this kind of talk , much better then I do..!!

I have many more Egyptian stamps to enter the collection, some from the UAR period and others from these last years of the XX Century.. It is sad that I don't have anymore any of those "Pyramid stamps" or other definitive's to enter , but they were already classified before I started this blog.. perhaps, one of these days I can buy a small lot , to finish some series and then we 'talk'...

El Alamein

New Entries

Some stamps from Egypt are on the Menu today...
I think they are beautiful stamps , very colorful and with lot's of details to analyse...
You already know of my personal quest for 1967 stamps.. Well these are all stamps from that particular year, but there are some of them missing yet...( the Year is not complete..)

Let us start..

EGYPT

This is a series that represents items obtained with the discovery of the treasure of Tutankhamun.. the opening of his Tomb is surrounded by mystery and questions, many questions...
I will not give any emphasis's to this mystery approach but i will leave here a link to an interesting recent Egyptian attempt to answer some of the questions about the Pharaoh's Paternity..  (*) [King Tut Unwrapped Ep.1 - part 1/part 2][Nefertiti and the Lost Dynasty (part 1/10)] If you want to pass some time among Gods, Pharaoh's and Mummy's You can follow this path, starting by the 1st King Tut video and searching for the others ...It's time well spent...

All of the stamps that are presented here today have this wmk.. it represents multiple eagles from a coat of arms... this is just an image taken from one catalog , but the wmk is clearly and easily visible in every one of the stamps...
these are really spectacular stamps...

1967 "Post Day / " (4) [Perf 11.5][Photo] Sc(712,713,B33,B34)

Some of you already noticed the presence of the Label "UAR" in all of these stamps... As you know the United Arab Republic begins in 1958 with the merge of Egyptian and Syrian Governments... However in 1961 a Military coup brings the independence from UAR to Syria..Egypt alone continued for some more years to be called the UAR..
[Left] 1967 "Ramadan Festival" (1) [Perf 11.5][Photo] Sc(714)
[Right] 1967 "Tree Festival" (1) [Perf 11.5][Photo] Sc(715)

These are stamps related to tourism... We can find in this series the Urgency of saving the Nubian Monuments ,publicity to Hunting, a reminder of the famous WW II Battle of El Alamein (*) , the Virgin's Tree and the importance of the Red Sea...

(*) there were two Battles of El Alamein, both taken place in 1942.. I leave here two links for Wikipedia, one for each Battle , for those who , like me , like to watch , study and know things about War strategy..

I Would like to end this post with some notes related somehow to Egypt and to these stamps..
In my recent attempts to find information about the Designers of the stamps I present here, I came across a Egyptian Site that captured my attention.. it is the site of the "New Library of Alexandria" where important sectors of Egyptian History and Legacy are kept and Digitized for future Generations.. it is the case of Postage Stamps and Coins ,that have a beautiful and well organized program in the site , but it is only in Arabic Language...!!! please , make this sections available to everyone..!! if it is a On-going project , there is no reason to deny this knowledge and info to the rest of the world...
Finally I would like to tell that some of these stamps would have much to gain if they were engraved..[Photogravure doesn't help...] ! they would be Great Works of Art of our little Stamp world....
