Through the Bridge

New Entries

Today I have another of those posts with not so many "talk" and several beautiful, beautiful stamps..some Turkish series from the Ottoman period and 2 others from the Republican Days..

Let us start , without delay...

two stamps from the series "Recapture of Adrianople" from 1913 Surcharged in the first case and overprinted in the second..This series in it's original form as 3 stamps with this common design representing the Mosque of Selimiye. this series was the first one of  Turkish Philately to have designed pictures of monuments ,people or Natural Landscapes .. I couldn't find the right Sc codes for the 2nd stamp (I'm sure it is there , but I missed it..)..
1) 1913 "Surcharge  over 'Recapture of Adrianople'" (4) [Recess (Bradbury Wilkinson Co.)] Sc(J62)

This is a Magnificent series, with great designs from Oskan Effendi.. The series is divided into Paras values and Piastra values.. the first 4 values (Paras) are [Litho] Printed and the others (Piastras) are [Recess] Printed .. the series is not completed (4 stamps are missing),because some of the high values are really High!!! Monuments and Landscapes are represented in these stamps with great detail.. I remember you that  for a closer view of the stamps, just click them..! the last stamp represented shouldn't be there , because it is not from the desired color.. the value is the same , and the design also, but the color is from a stamp issued in 1920 for another series of Landscapes..
1914 "Sights and views from Turkey" (17) [Des (Oskan Effendi)][Litho (Paras values)][Recess (Piastra Values)(Bradbury Wilkinson Co Ltd, London)] Sc(254,...,265,596)

I bought last year a Turkish Catalog (Pulko 2006), and it  divides this series in two different one's..This is a natural fact, because Scott ,sometimes merge series in order to facilitate the reading of the catalog and posterior classification of the stamps.. In most cases, I use the Scott version ...well, Pulko divide the series in two, the first part issued in 1916/1917 and the second in 1917/1918..The 1st is called (by Pulko) "Dolmabahce Series" (Dolmabahce is the Sultan's Palace) and correspond to the Recessed printed stamps, the final values higher or equal to 10pi... The 2nd is called the "Vienna Issue" , because the stamps were engraved and [typo] printed in that city..(values smaller than 5pi)... I want to highlight that in this blog the stamps sometimes are not displayed in the right  position within the series...this happens because I can only bond images with similar measure properties....so , I recommend a cautious approach to the stamps , always seeing what is their 'face' value...
This time , I present some stamps in duplicate, and others that I already have in the collection (presented in a previous post with Turkey stamps...) , both cases , because after analysis I could saw that there are color variations...
[from left to right [Up/Down]]
1,2) Artillery at Sedd-Ul-Bahr 3,4)Mosque at Ortakeui 5) Map of Gallipoli 6) Seraglio Point 7) Pyramids 8,9) Dolmabahce Palace 10) Map of Gallipoli 11) Lighthouse 12)Martyrs Column 13) Sentry 14,15) Sultan Mohammed V
1916/1918 "Various Designs" (15) [Typo (2pa,5pa,10pa,50pa,2pi,5pi)][Recess (20pa,1pi,3x10pi,25pi,3x50pi)(Engraved and Printed in Vienna)] Sc(420,...,432,434,439)

1939 "Opening of the Ankara-Erzurum Railway" (4) [Typo (Damga Matbaasi)] Sc(829,...,832)

1939 "1st Death Anniv of Kemal Ataturk " (8) [Photo (Courvoisier)] Sc(835,836,838,839)

I hope this post increase Your will to collect Turkish Stamps.. Rich History , Culture and nice stamps are always a call to the collector...Enjoy Turkey!!..

It a series with common designs used in all the former Portuguese Colonies... it emphasis's Explorer's , Navigator's , Warrior's and Men of Knowledge, that distinguish themselves in Portuguese History..
In this particular series , we have designs of Vasco Da Gama , Mouzinho de Albuquerque , Prince Henry the Navigator , and Afonso De Albuquerque..

Turkey

In these stamps from Turkey there are two distinct groups... one from the Ottoman period and other from the more recent , Republican period.

There are two possible perforations ( 13.5 and 12.5)

1960 "Manisa Festival" (4) [Perf 13][Offset] Sc(B75,...,B78)
The monuments highlighted are the Manisa Asylum (1st,2nd) , the Blue Mosque (3rd)...
I cannot find data about the Personality represented in the 4th stamp .. (only sites in Turkish language and I don't even know the right name ...  it's better not to invent one.!)

      United States of America

In the next posts , I will include some US or Spanish stamps , because I have many of them to classify... also from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Russia ... I will leave a small part in the end of the posts to show some of these stamps...

Tughra

New Entries

Today, I think the post will be a little bit shorter than the last.. I have stamps from Turkey, the Ottoman period and some President Ataturk stamps...

Sultan Abdul Hamid II has reigned in Turkey from 1876 to 1909.. what is common to all the stamps of this series (6) , is the Tughra and Arms of the Sultan.. the difference between them is the design of the frame...
Series from 1892/1898 "Arms and Tughra of Sultan Abdul Hamid II (Various Frames)"
Perf: 13.5
SG(142a,143,144) Sc(96,96a,97,98) [the first two stamps have only one code , in SG]
[Typo]

I already talked , and I will talk again about Tughra's... but what is a Tughra??

stamps from the series (10) 1908 "Crescent Moon & Star over Sultan's Tughra"
Perf: 12.5
SG(237b,238c) Sc(135a,136) [Typo]

[Left] Complete series "5pa Surcharge on 1892 10pa 'Arms and Tughra of Sultan Abdul Hamid II (Various frames)' 1897"
Perf: 13.5
SG(144) Sc(98) [Typo]

[Right] I did not detected the blue overprint in a first look to this stamp..
this is a stamp from a series (5) 1909.. it is a stamp projected to external mail... in a time when Turkey Post Office had a ferocious competition from foreign Office's in Turkey (British, French, German, etc) , this Overprint offer's the merchants and Exporter company's a special discount , to improve the use of National stamps.
This Overprint was made on stamps also from 1909 .. so we have : "Overprint on 'Crescent Moon & Star over Sultan's Tughra' 1909" ; the difference between the 1908 and the 1909 series is due to the position of the Arabic characters below the Sultan's Tughra... in the 1908 series , they touch the center circular frame and in the 1909 series , there is a space between the center frame and the characters (of course, if you know Arabic writing , perhaps the message is different....)
Perf: 12
SG(290c) Sc(162) [Typo]

from a series (8) 1901 "Sultan Abdul Hamid II Tughra (Foreign Mail)"
Perf: 13.5
SG(178) Sc(105) [Typo]

This next group of President Ataturk stamps was in a little glassine bag, since the beginning of 2013 (someone brought them from Turkey..)

stamps from two different series...
1st) from a series (5) 1966 "Kemal Ataturk"
Perf: 12.5
SG(2171) Sc(1725) [Litho]
2nd) from a series (7) 1978 "Kemal Ataturk"
Perf: 13
SG(2434a) Sc(2068) [Litho]

there is nothing more to say about President Ataturk, that already has not been said before  in other posts..so, I will just write the stamps data and nothing more....

[Left] 1) series (5) 2006 "Kemal Ataturk"
Perf: 13 x 13.5
SG(O3696) Sc(O247) [Litho]
2) Complete series 2007 "Kemal Ataturk"
Perf: 13 x 13.5

3) series (4) 2008 "Kemal Ataturk"
Perf: 13 x 13.5
SG(O3892) [Litho] [Wmk]

[Right] from a series (13) 2009 "Mustafa Kemal Attaturk Commemoration"
Perf: 14
SG(3899,3900,3906) [Litho] [Wmk]

in this post there was no information about stamp designers... it was not possible to gather it..it is dificult ( and  I have a National stamp catalog.!!.)

A Monkey in the Lab

New Entries

Today I have a small mix of stamps

Here We have 3 different overprints made out from the same 1902 series of King D. Carlos I stamps..
1) stamp of 100r with overprint "Republica" in Red , from a set 9 1914 "Overprint 'Republica' on "King D.Carlos I (1902)'"
Perf: 11.5
SG(225) Sc(164)
The paper of this stamp is blueish (the color is blue on blue).. at a first look, it's difficult to see, but if we put 2 stamps close together , one paper blueish and the other paper white , both with the face down , it became very clear.. the colors are totally different..
Another interesting aspect in this particular stamp, is a small dot of blue ink at the top of the right corner of the stamp..I don't know what it is .. I must study it more carefully...
2) stamp of 700r with overprint "Republica" in Carmine , from a set 15 1911 "Overprint  'Republica' on 'King D. Carlos I (1902)'"
Perf: 11.5
SG(165) Sc(102)
The paper used in this stamp is yellowish.. the color of the stamp is Violet on Yellow..
3) stamp of 50r with double overprint ("Republica" in Red and "Provisorio" in Black), from a set 3 1914 "Overprint 'Republica' in Red on 'King D.Carlos I [overprinted 'Provisorio'](1902)'"
Perf: 11.5
SG(147) Sc(181)

All of these 3 stamps are from a series designed and engraved by Eugene Mouchon, famous French engraver. you can see this by the small label in the inferior frame..In my opinion it is the most beautiful series of King D. Carlos I.; to collect the "Mouchon series"  is a difficult task to accomplish , because it has ramifications through Portugal and all of it's former Colonies (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde Islands, St. Thomas and Prince Islands, Timor, Macau, Guinea Bissau and even India..) ..

Let's turn to the East and make a stop in Romania.. This is a stamp where King Carol I is represented and the stamp belong to a series 14 1939 "Birth Centenary of King Carol I" ; it is a beautiful series classified as "most Wanted" (my classification..)...
Perf: 14 x 13.5
SG(1401) Sc(486)
Wmk
[ the stamp is damaged in the inferior right perforation..]

from a set 6 1967 "Cultural Anniversary's" ; the personality represented is Dino Lippati (Pianist)
Perf: 13.5
SG(3482) Sc(1939)

Now , we have a stamp from a set 6 1974 "Famous Romanians Anniversary's" ; here is Bishop Dosoftei that is represented.
Perf: 13
SG(4098) Sc(2509)

Now in Guinea, we have 3 stamps from the set 7 1983 "Centenary of Discovery of Tubercle Bacillus"
Since the 60's and until the end of the 80's (I don't have no stamp posterior..) , Guinea have some interesting stamps, especially if you are fan of colorful stamps..
Perf: 13.5
SG(1092,1093,1094) Sc(865,866,867)

from the Russia set 4 1977 "80th Birth Anniv of Soviet Marshals"
Perf: 12
SG(4639) Sc(4548)

another Russia stamp, now representing Yuri Gagarin; Complete set 1961 "World's First Manned Space Flight"
Perf: 12 x 11.5
SG(2576a) Sc(2463)

Kemal Ataturk is a mark in Turkey Philately.. His name appears in series, both commemorative as definitive.
from a set 3 1985 "Kemal Ataturk 1985"
Perf: 13 x 13.5
SG(2917) Sc(2336)

It is a set that is called  London Series (all the work done by Bradbury Wilkinson, London ) ... it represents the Cruiser Hamidie.. this stamp and the last one of the set ( representing the Sultan..) are exceptions , because all the other 15 stamps are just sights and views of Turkey...(I am here in front of another "must have" situation!!..)

these are stamps from a set 7 1916 "Dolmabahce Series".. they represent the Sultan Mohammed V and the Sultan's Palace Dolmabahce..
