I recently bought a lot of US stamps, and together with that lot was a small group of Canadian stamps.. I had some more to present so I joined them and I think that I will need two more posts to show them.. they are stamps from all periods , from the early 1868 to 1985...I decided to start with the last years of Queen Victoria's Reign...
First , a brief view of all this early period is necessary... First we have the Jacques Cartier and the first Queen Victoria stamps...than in 1868 the "Large Queens" appear and in 1870 the "Small Queens".. in 1897 comes the "Jubilee Issue"...
These are just color variations of the same 3c stamp...in the stamp Queen Victoria is represented in 1837 and in 1897... I like very much to have many stamps of each value , if they have something different from each other.. just a small color variation is needed to qualify the stamp to enter the collection... some times , the variation is in the background, other times in the vignette itself, and other times perhaps the stock conditions played an important role... catalogs only give two options for these stamps.. rose and Bright rose...so we are talking of the vignette and the frame ornaments, because the background is clearly Carmine or Rose Carmine... (I definitely need one of those SG color sampler's.!.) .. another point I want to highlight is the Bonus of 100% or sometimes 150% that well centered and never hinged stamps get in all the Victorian stamps...

After this series , we have the two QV definitive series "Maple Leaf" and "Numeral" (depending on the presence in the inferior corners of small leafs or numerals.).
after a first quick look to this stamp, the words "XMAS 1898" could bring some confusion.. if it is a Christmas stamp, it would be one of the first one's or even the first.. (I don't know, I don't collect topics...)...the fact is that the stamp was issued in Dec 7 , but the Official first Day was Dec 25 1898...
The stamp show us the Imperial Territories , but it present's also a left displacement of the Carmine...I think this should be normal... this is the Grey, Carmine & black stamp, but the one that is always searched is the Lavender stamp... I read that it could be easily mistaken by some greyish shades and it is a very fugitive color ( exposure to light and other climatic variables, could spoil the stamp...)... the possibilities also includes several shades of blue from the blue to Deep Blue..

King Edward's Reign began in 1901, and the King's famous definitive series appeared in 1903... After that we have in 1908 the "Quebec III Centenary"
In a previous post with Canada stamps I already presented the 1c green 'Cartier & Champlain' stamp... the 0.5c stamp present's us the Prince and Princess of Wales and the 2c , King Edward and Queen Alexandra...This is a beautifully designed and engraved series , and it is a "Must Have With Time" goal.. i'm sure future acquisitions will contemplate the missing stamps of this series...

With the start of King George V reign in 1910 , the appearance of a new Definitive series was just a matter of time, so , in 1911 a new series 'pop up' from the Canadian Postal Service and it is known as the "Admiral Series" , because of the Uniform the King is wearing in the picture...it is also a beautiful series, like many , many others from KGV... it is beautifully engraved by Robert Savage and two of the values (1c and 3c) could be of 2 distinct types...
The 'R' of 'THREE' almost touches the Oval Frame
I want to apologize because I sometimes show stamps with some Rust spots... I know it is not very beautiful, it is not the desirable stamp, but if I have an empty space in my collection that could be filled by one of these "Rust" stamps, I don't think twice... the surprise for me was that , most people , actually 'Think Twice' !! (I have a small story for the end of the post..)..
This series started to be issued in 1911 and ended with the 8c stamp in 1925 , because during all this time have taken place meetings of the UPU that altered the color specifications for each value, so new issues had to be done to fulfill the requested parameters..

The 3c brown stamp, representing the "Fathers of Confederation" is invalid, it is highly damaged, with two small holes in the center, and that I think is something that qualifies a stamp like invalid....it is a stamp from 1917 that I present just to show you, because he doesn't entered the collection... the other two stamps , of 2c and 12c, belong to the 1927 series that commemorates the Anniversary of the Confederation...

Another Beautiful series, known as the 'Scroll Series" ( because of the frame's top ornaments of the King's stamps) ... it is just a stamp from that series, so there are more 6 to acquire because I have some of the George V portraits that I decided not to present today...
1928 "Scroll Issue" (11) [Des (Herman Herbert Schwartz)][Engr (Robert Savage)][Recess] Sc(155)
This is one of the stamps of the 1935 series commemorating the Silver Jubilee of King George V... the stamp represents Princess Elizabeth as a small child... this stamp could have a particularity , that is to have a small dot below the eye... it is the result of a fault in a particular plate and it only affects one stamp in each sheet ...this variety is called 'the weeping Princess'..I took this scan of an old Canadian catalog....

We are now entering the George VI Reign...This is a stamp commemorating the King's Coronation.. George VI appears with Queen Elizabeth..As you noticed, several of the above stamps are already designed by Herman Herbert Schwartz, that devoted his entire life to ABNC,Ottawa and designed many stamps from 1927 to the end of the 50's.. He was a very versatile designer , Master of Portrait, landscape, Vehicles, historical painting, etc...His contribution to Canadian stamps was of Enormous importance...

the following stamps came , as I said before, in a lot I bought recently... one thing that make me feel somehow perplexed , was the quantity of stamps from this next series, that in a first view and after looking through Scott World , seem to be a normal series without anything strange...this fact led me to buy a cheap and old specialized Canadian catalog...And there it was..! After all there was a small secret..! this catalog says that this variety only happens in the 3c stamp, but the lot I bought brought me along several stamps of the other values also, so I think the person who owned the lot knows about this small secret but though it could happen in any of the stamps
Well, I checked all of them and of course, any of the presented stamps had the collar variety , but it was Fun!! The series is still incomplete with the 4c and 8c stamps missing...

This is one of the most famous Canadian series : The War Series, that give focus to the War Effort in Canada, with designs about several industries that have developed a lot and were of great importance for the Allied Effort...
Only the 20c and 50c are new to the collection.. the 10c presents a different Brown...the 4c, 8c,13c,14c and 1$ are still missing but I'm working on it..

This next and final series is a very Famous one from 1982.. These stamps were issued to commemorate Youth Philatelic Exhibition in Toronto... the stamps represent replicas of famous stamp designs from earlier days , trying to persuade Young people to collect old stamps...it is a beautiful series, but it is a [Litho] printed series, and much of the Engraving Beauty is left behind , but the Purpose is honest and Sincere ( and in the end ' it is what counts' " )

And now my little story, as promised...
A month ago, a friend of mine call me saying he had a stamp collection for me to see.. At first I was reluctant, he was not a collector, he does not understand much of this world of ours... when i arrived to his home, a few days latter, i saw 6 small notebooks ( yes, those who can be to write or for Math purposes..) with 40 pages each , full of stamps.. I opened the first one and something immediately cross my mind .. the colors were fabulous, fresh , like in new stamps, but they were old, really old..!. after seeing some of the stamps, I start to draw in my mind the Picture of the former collector, who has died in 2008 with 91 years... there was no influence of outside light in those notebooks, but time severely eroded some stamps.. there were rust spots in many of them... The 'Man' was a world collector and in those 6 books there were stamps from the early days of numerous countries and colonial regions.. I just ended the first book seeing some marvelous stamps from the Alfonso XIII series 'Cadete' and 'Medallon', with great , great colors... I was amazed , but I was feeling very bad because he wanted to sell the stamps , but I knew he would not be able to sell them and I didn't have the money to buy them.. I refuse myself to see the other stamps, and I began to be very annoyed with all this thing of the MNH stamps... the problem is , some of the stamps are not common, they really have high cv...but Rich collectors don't buy stamps with rust spots, and poor collectors don't have even the money to give 20 or 30 € for a stamp.. so the final conclusion is that "I should be able to make an offer, in that moment..and for the all 6 notebooks.. I must get a Job !! Yes , one of those uninteresting jobs... a normal one , that allows me to have € 200 or € 300 when I want to... That's life...times are still bad here in Portugal, and I have used this justification to simply stay... calmly,.. waiting.. but that can not be anymore.. money is in the end, and I must have a better approach to life and "try to find a job.!!." .. it is my main task in future Weeks...
I leave here just a scan of two of those Old, Old stamps... Imperial Dragons from the first series of China...
I actually prefer to have these two stamps, with rust, spots and damaged , than to have their empty space .... But opinions are opinions , and we should not discuss them!!
